This summer I discovered, seemingly accidentally, how kicking once per stroke is extremely efficient (specifically kicking down with the leg that is on the same side as the arm that is extending forward, which is the side rotating downward). It even allowed me to breathe once every five strokes, although only in relatively small increments, like a whole lap. I haven't done it for long enough distances to swear by that pattern.

Hmm, I never thought about it before, but I would guess that I inhale through my nose and mouth and also exhale through both too, but will check that out at the pool tomorrow. I just breathe how it is comfortable for me. On back stroke, I breathe every arm stroke. I tried to up my tempo, and that just burned more O2, so every arm pull.... I remember seeing on a TV show once where the guest was an opera singer, and he would take a full breath in less than a second. You could barley hear the breath pause. It is kind of the same thing in the pool. I did try for years to breathe on every 3rd arm stroke, and after 100 yards, I was gasping. Gallop style for me, breathing on every other stroke. I think most of the Olympic women swimmers either use gallop style like Katie and Summer, but Ariarne Titmus does a 2, 2, 3 or 4 pattern. I don't think I have ever seen any of the women breathing every 3rd stroke. Pretty much all of the men breathe every other stroke, and pretty much all of them swim gallop style. I did see some one in the 100 breathing every 4th stroke, but I would think they would be in oxygen debt at the end of the race.

Why can’t I exhale through my mouth? Which is what I’ve always done. I’m not a competitive swimmer, I just swim a mile every morning for exercise and mood adjustment 😊

I returned to swimming this summer after a 4yr. hiatus. Been taking a Swimming 101 YMCA class the last few months and the breathing is getting easier for me.
Been building breath from every 3 to 5 strokes and seeing about every 7 strokes.

A breathing exercise I do whenever I go on a moderate walk is alternate my breath from inhale through the nose out the mouth and breath in through the mouth then out the nose.
I do this so my body and mind can start conditioning to both ways of breathing.
It seems to help if I need to change my swimming breathing pattern. 😊👍

Hi Fares, I’ve been swimming many years and noticed that I breathe in with my mouth and breathe out mostly through my nose and also a bit through my mouth while I’m swimming. Is this something I need to look into and change?

Fares can you please make a video on how to properly split/pace a 50 free? I did a time trial today and went out in 13, but came back in 17.

I have pectus excavatum which severely limits lung capacity to 50%. I'm well beyond the age of operating. When I was a child and teen that option wasn't available to baby boomers and besides I could swim forever when young. I keep swimming just to be able to keep breathing out of the pool now. Many years of practice and still max 15 yards, rest, repeat. I was doing every 3 strokes but had to decrease many of my "laps" to 2 strokes. Anyway, I love the coaching like yours as it helps the mental side which is probably half of it when I feel like I am gasping for air.

Lots of information, thanks for doing this, it’s very helpful. Speaking of breathing, why do you cut out all of the breaths in this video? I find it makes it hard to watch, doesn’t give me time to digest the information and makes me nervous. Kind of ironic.

In terms of breathing: when you breath in, do you hold your breath then breath out through the nose, or just immediately breath out through your nose until you breath in again? I usually swim 3 strokes 1 breath...and was told to take a breath, hold it, then breath out just before the next breath. I find this exhausting
