Great info. Unlike most dentists who try to make you think implant is a piece of cake and your best option. I only want conservative dentists. Wish I lived in your area.

I was not a candidate because my sinuses were too close to put implants in. He did not mention that. I’m sure I could for my lower teeth though.

Once your teeth are extracted and they said you have good bone I still able to get implants in the future when I can afford them. In the meantime I went the denture way because of the price. Can you still loose bone or become not eligible for implants once the teeth are extracted if so how and why?

They're not all titanium screws you can also get zirconia screws for those people who are concerned about having metal in the mouth which I would strongly advise against

Three American dentists offered me implants with no problem. Two British dentists refused on the basis that I have an autoimmune which creates a problem with dry mouth. Would I love to have both teeth as implants? Sure. Am I prepared to pay a fortune when there is a 75% chance of failure? Nope.

i qualified 4 dental implants - but couldn't afford so i went w/posts & caps & bridges 15 years later:
(Now only 5 orignal teeth remain) never any problems w/the new stuff or teeth & i regularly eat raw chickpea beans as easily as if they r peanuts. if i win the Lottery - i prbbly would spend 4 the implants option. if i still qualify

I was very lucky. I have a very good dental surgeon. I had healthy bone, but because several of my teeth had been removed years earlier, they had to do bone grafts to build up the bone in that area at the time when they were putting in the implants. I have 4 implants on the bottom and 6 on the top. I highly recommend this be the minimum number on those arches. This was all to get snap-on dentures which are awesome. During the healing period, you have regular dentures which are awful and I can't imagine going through life with regular dentures. You literally can't eat much of anything. Once the snap-ons are in, it is 99% like having your own teeth, but you will be taking care of your 'teeth' much more than you likely did with real teeth and the reason is that you are extremely aware when you need to clean your teeth and mouth which in my case is everytime I eat and even if you haven't eaten in a while, you will be aware of just not having cleaned them in a while. BTW, for anyone with any kind of device in their mouth, I highly recommend ultrasonic cleaners for them instead of just soaking with the dental tablets. These are small electronic devices you will put water into, a denture tablet, put in your dentures, and then you turn on the device for some number of minutes. Devices can get plaque as well and this device will keep that from ever happening. If you have ever seen a ship's propeller all nice and shiny while the rest of the ship is covered in all kinds of things, this is the same principal. The ultrasonic devices work by using cavitation in the water which cause microscopic explosions in the water on every square mm of the device. They are fairly cheap, running about 40 bucks and many are specifically designed for dentures.

Dr. Langston: I wish you would’ve mentioned another reason a person wouldn’t be a good candidate for an implant: having a very dense wavy mandible. My MIL has this anatomy n the implant was a disaster. She got osteomyelitis as a lifelong consequence n has to take penicillin 2x a day forever. She also received antibiotic infusions 2x for 6 weeks. The oral surgeon who had to debride the afflicted area told us that this type of anatomy is common in ppl of Hispanic or African descent. He himself is Hispanic so it wasn’t a stereotype or racist thing he was saying. He gave me the medical name of this bone condition but I can’t remember it.
The hell my MIL has had from the failed implant will make you rip out your hair. Just getting the correct dx took several mths and every dental professionals n a biopsy. All roads led her to the Infectious Disease Dr for proper treatment.
Implants definitely are not for everyone.

Kudos for disclosing that "bone growing medicines" impair the body's ability to heal around a dental implant! For those who still have the ability to reason, that's letting the cat out of the bag regarding bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates (ex., Fosamax and Boniva) are known to reduce osteoclast activity which, as a result: (1) does nothing to increase osteoblast production nor build bone mass and (2) contributes instead to osteonecrosis of the jaw. Thanks for putting this out there; so that folks may be prompted to do their own research!

Keeping the gauze moist and pressed into/against the spot where the tooth was removed and clamping down on it while sucking on a cigarette can help stop the clot from dislodging. Still, being careful not to suck too hard on a cigarette for 48 to 72 hours is best, to allow the clot to remain while the flesh is closing up and rejuvenating. Just a little helpful advice though not a definite guarantee.
