In this short I will show you how to make a fire with a broken lighter. The reason I do this is because in 2003, there were two women hiking a trail in the High Uinta's in Utah. This is at 9-12,000 feet elevation, a storm came through and they got lost, walking off trail onto a game trail (animal trail) they finally found shelter under a rock over hang and tried to build a fire, One of the women discovered that her lighter was broken, the others worked for a little while until it ran out of fuel, though without great enough care their fire went out at some point. When they didn't show up at the end point of their hike, the family got worried, and Search and Rescue, along with many volunteers, went looking for them. After several weeks, the search was called off.

Several months later, their bodies were found 15 miles off the trail they were initially on. They had died of hypothermia (froze to death). The saddest part is that their rock shelter was within 100 yards (~110 meters) of another trail, one which S&R and volunteers had walked down. Had they been able to maintain a fire, they very well might have been found alive.

Its with this in mind that I'm teaching people how to do this. Yes, I sincerely agree that burning plastic isn't ideal, and I in no way suggest we just burn plastic every time we want to start a fire. Its hydrophobic nature, though, makes it ideal for wet spaces, and it burns hot and longer than wood shavings or any other natural material (that I have in my area) other than maybe fatwood. (which incidentally produces the same carcinogens as plastic. Please read my reply in the pinned comment for more information about this)
