My 15yo daughter has PCOS and has gained over 40lbs in the past year despite eating a balanced diet (I cook a lot with whole foods ). I am desperately trying to help her, she has been taking Metformin and Inositol for 3 months and really hasn’t seen any improvement and frequently complains of digestive issues. She wants to try keto but I wanted to ask if you have ever had a patient who did not respond well to keto because of the saturated fat. I have a concern that she doesn’t do well with high fat and have recently learned about the FTO gene (just ordered 23 and me to see if she has that gene). Have you ever had a patient where keto was not a fit? She is desperate to try something to help her start making progress and stop gaining weight, but I am both optimistic and nervous about her trying keto. Would love any feedback! Thank you!!!

I also have adhd so navigating the organization of a diet is difficult for me to do everyday. My brain cannot do all that food prep, cooking properly, having all the ingredients, not forgetting that vegetables are rotting in the fridge, etc. Too many moving parts so to speak. The part of the brain that manages things like this is deficient for me. I also cannot afford meal delivery boxes. I’m not sure what to do. What do I do?😢

I have extreme PCOS, high androgenic levels, acne vulgaris, alopecia to the point ive been wearing wigs for 2 years now, and hirsutism. When i was diagnosed at 11years, ive had irregular periods and ultrasounds per my cystic ruptures. I was on birth control at 11years old because my cystic acne got so bad it was spreading to all areas of my body that became more difficult to control with general acne medication. Like, the cystic acne would bubble into a boil on the derma layer or grow into a dermal cyst under the derma layer. I was reccomended to do acid treatments because the drs "didnt really believe i had PCOS" because i was "too young" to diagnose, even though the labs and ultrasounds confirm pre and post ruptured trauma from multiple cystic ruptures.

Back in mid 2022 i was able to get through to my OBGYN dr that i had PCOS and it was getting worse and affecting every bit of my health: mental, physical and emotional. My labs reflected my statements and my primary dr was concerned for my growing emotional symptoms. I was placed on medium strength COC's (Wera) and Spironolactone to control the hyperandrongenism i was experiencing. Over the course of 3 months i noticed a better shift in my mood, physicality and mental health. I was starting to feel normal. By the time i started the Ketogenic diet of 25 carbs or less each day, within 3 months of the diet combined with my medication treatments, i lost 55lbs and i felt better than ive ever felt before. I honestly wanted to cry at how AMAZING i felt! It made me hate my body more for NOT WORKING PROPERLY because i want to FEEL NORMAL without taking the treatments... even when i had to change careers and pause my medication treatments for 6 months in the transition, i felt as sick as i had before and realize that this diet and medical treatments were my answer to controlling this unfortunate syndrome passed to me from my biological mom. The diet and treatments work for me and i plan to continue them up to the end of my life. I hope the diet and/or treatments also work for many also living with PCOS

I was 273, followed a keto diet and got down to 230. A lot of things in life hit me and then I let someone convince me that keto isnt a good idea and that i should just try calorie counting...started to gain weight. Then i was told to try and just avoid gluten...REALLY gained weight. Then i went through a phase where i craved SO MUCH carbs and sugar. I was always hungry and i would try to start keto and would fail, over and over again. Finally i hit my heaviest which was 280 and I felt so sad/stressed. I have one last resort and that is what i did, i took a bunch of vitamins/minerals and fish oil. By the next day literally every craving was gone, day two i was able to wake up early and by day 3 i was able to start working out again! in less than 10 days i am now easily/happily back on keto and i am down 11 lbs. i am also working out but i know i am only able to do that b.c i am back on keto. YOU know ur body, Dont let ppl sway you away from what YOU know works for YOU!

Interesting, feeling how the bloating and pain receded within approximately two months made all the difference, I simply go’ogled the latest by Tilly Strankten and her Ovarian Cyst Guide and although it really took about 10 weeks for it to totally shrink and vanish I’ve never felt so light and relaxed.

The only way that I had been able to lose weight is cutting grains and dairy, with moderate carbs around 50g to 90 g if I am active. I remember a doctor told me that I will not be able to lose weight Bc the pcos, I am so happy that I didn’t believe that lie.
My macros are 50% fat, 25% protein and 20% carbs.

Dr. Berry, have you considered oxalate overload as being a factor in PCOS? Could the cysts be formed of oxalate crystals? A mostly meat based diet with few or no oxalate containing foods such as spinach works wonders for PCOS.

☝️☝️☝️ Truly, natural remedies do work. If they didn't, we wouldn't have used them for thousands of years. And, pharmaceutical companies wouldn't be studying plants, taking extracts of them, and patenting them as drugs. This is not a claim or lies I was cured of PCOS, and my friend was also cured of Chronic UTI by Dr. Egobe herbal medicine in case you are having any health challenges you can contact him and also get a cure too, through him you can get pregnant and have your baby.

Hey! I just wanted to share my story in case it even helps 1 person!

I have been highly active since I was very young; upon visiting my pediatrician as a child, I was told that the reason I wasn't getting consistent periods, or ever getting a period at all, was due to me being so highly active. I always have shown the signs of high testosterone/PCOS such as unwanted hair growth-- kids definitely made fun of me with my unibrow, chin hair and upper lip hair-- accelerated muscle growth, deeper voice, smaller breast development, absent/inconsistent periods... Since I was so highly active in martial arts and competitive basketball, I stayed in relatively good shape for a long time; when I stopped being as active as I was, my PCOS problem got worse. My diet was VERY high in carbohydrates and processed foods, due to the food that was provided to me by my parents that passed down poor nutritional behaviors and lifestyles. I always felt like there was weight that I just could NOT get off even if I was doing an insane amount of cardio, barely eating, making myself drink more water than I even needed because I needed SOMETHING to work and I would have tried anything.

When I was 16 years old, I received the birth control implant, called Nexplanon. I believe to this day that Nexplanon was a big contributor to my hormones being imbalanced. I never knew if I was just a moody, hormonal teenager, or if there was something wrong on a deeper level. I was not surrounded by people educated on proper diet and nutrition, either--this included my pediatrician at the time with out dated beliefs and lack of knowledge on the matter. Being on birth control made me gain about 25 pounds and it sunk me deeper into depression and self-image issues.

After 4 years of having the Nexplanon implant (they're good for 3 years, then I got it replaced), I was old enough to make my own medical decisions so I made the appointment myself and got the implant removed. The damage done from birth control and over consumption of carbohydrates (I did not know the 2nd part back then) took YEARS after this to stabilize.

After a consistent last few years of modifying my diet, I can finally say that I have gotten my PCOS under control. This is when I discovered the Carnivore diet and Keto at 24 years old.

When I started the carnivore diet 3 months ago, I was getting Body Composition Tests done. Weigh-in #1, my body fat mass was 61.5, lean body mass 127.4, visceral fat level 12, BMI 29.6, percent body fat 32.6%. After 2 months, my body fat mass was 55.4, lean body mass 132.5, visceral fat level 10, percent body fat 29.5%. All in such a small period of time.

To everyone out there struggling with their nutrition-- NEVER GIVE UP, never stop learning; this is a life-long journey. It is going to be complicated because we are all so amazingly and uniquely different, so whatever diet that may work for someone else, may not work for you! Never stop trying to unravel the mystery of YOU. It is probably the most frustrating thing ever, but if the light at the end of the tunnel means health and wellness, the leap of faith is worth it.

The carnivore diet has its controversies and bias surrounding it, but having a personal experience with the diet after struggling for so long and being at a plateau for literally years in my prime of being an athlete, I have learned that there are some TRUTHS to be learned from this diet. I am still learning every single day. I am sure I left out some good details in this story, and I am sure I ranted on for too long on this comment post, but I hope that I could've been of help to even just 1 person! Peace and love to all!

Hello! Just wanna share my concern: I am 25 yrs old diagnosed with PCOS, and I have just recently discovered ketogenic and carnivorous diets. Right now, I am a half-hearted keto-carnivore, and mind you, I do feel relatively better and stronger. My only concern is that I LOVE FOOD and sweets! I love making (cooking), creating, tasting, and eating GOOD food. It served as a great connection with my father, also. And i do not know if I can commit to a strict keto/carnivore diet for the rest of my life. Somebody help me and suggest something that I can do with this dilemna :((

Also, right now, i think i feel a bit frustrated as i do not see much weight loss in me :<

Not a story of hope sorry. But I’m going to test this out to see how it goes!
My doctor knew nothing about PCOS when I was diagnosed as a teenager. His words caused so much damage to me and gave fuel to my stepmother to torment me more than she already did. he said it just meant I was more male than female, for decades my family picked on me. I wasn’t big, but was put on the pill and have struggled ever since. Now I’m the worst I have ever been health wise. No doctor has been able to help me with this, so now decades later I’ve probable missed out on ever having a child. I wish I knew all this when I was younger, could’ve changed everything, physically and mentally. So glad information and support is better these days and that more girls and women can make changes early. Thank you for sharing your insights.

I had PCOS since starting my first cycle. At age 16-17 I could no longer take all the symptoms. I was overweight. Had no muscle mass whatsoever. Terrible acne. Terrible gut microbiome. Inconsistent cycles which were unbelievably painful. And my mustache was thicker than those of the boys in my class.
I started doing Keto during spring time and also got into the habit of working out in the early mornings. Mainly either going for a jog in the morning sun first and then some home exercises with my own bodyweight. I dropped weight so easily that summer. Exercising became fun. My symtpoms got about 75% better, I dropped 2 clothings sizes and even my allergies went away.
Would have never made it without the ketogenic diet
