Does Grand Theft Auto V Have a Good Story?

Short answer: yes

Personally, I didnt think the story was great. Primarily because the story is basically just being repeatedly blackmailed by an FBI agent. Which is fine. But it doesnt really make sense because whatever downsides there are to killing the FBI agent- ie life in prison- they would get anyway for the crimes that they commit FOR that FBI agent. It would certainly be far less dangerous to just kill him than it is to do the crazy heists and what not for him. So we basically have three characters being taken for a ride again and again and not using their brains at all lol.

I love how at first Trevor seemed like the most disloyal character with how he acts but then when the story unfolds you hear how much pain he went through losing his friend and how Michael didn't give a crap at first. Even after all that disrespect, Trevor didn't do nothing to Michael's family nor him even when he had multiple instances to get revenge.

Tried so hard multiple times to get into this story. Maybe restarted it 5 times and never once finished it.

My favorite always was Michael, he seems the most complex out of the three. Nothing too exceptional or anything, but I really like how fundamentally flawed his personality is and how aware he is of that. At it's core he is a bad person, and seemingly always was considering what he says to his psychiatrist, and even when he tries to amend things and start anew, his violent persona ends up raising two brats who hates him and an unhappy marriage filled with misery. He sacrificed everything and everyone he loved for a new life that he hates. Of course he would end up being a bitter asshole.

Despite everything he says about him, he obviously loves Trevor even after killing him in ending A since a couple in game days later, he basically blames Franklin for it and blocks his number, a very obvious way to cope and deflect guilt.

And just personally I love how he is written, his sarcastic banter and petty speech is just so funny to me, and of course Ned kills it with his performance.

i thought the story was amazing and surprisingly felt real despite how absurd the game is for the most part

the fact that, from a traditional writing standpoint, it kinda sucks, plays into the strength of the game. The game itself doesn't even feel like it knows where it is in the grand scheme of its life, but that's just true for everybody.

in the grand scheme, michael, trevor, and franklin have no idea where they are or where they are going. The main recurring theme all 3 face is trying to find your spot in the world.
michael feels like he lost his spot,
trevor feels like it's being ripped away from him,
franklin is trying to find what that spot even is.

because of this, the game lets you choose what message you take out of it. At no point across your entire playthrough do you have any real agency. Until that decision. A lot of people probably just choose to kill whichever of the 3 they like the least, but even that in the meta sense is the game letting you choose it's meaning.

Its crazy we got a conclusion to Franklins story via online DLC but at least it confirmed ending C was canon.

remarkably good analysis. i have played this game 3 times and never picked up on this narrative arc at all. i dismissed it as kind of becoming the thing it was satirising, an empty commercial product. i was wrong!

The thing I kept asking myself when I played through this story was if beneath all the over the top comedy, all the goofy and satirical elements, all the anti-corportism and anti-american sentiment, if there really was something of substance to be found in GTA V's story. I didn't have to look for that in GTA IV, which had a healthy ratio of seriousness and goofiness. That right there is this games weakness...it's pretty hard to take serious under any context.

Trevor is the character that is supposed to be crazy, but has a point about Michael all along XD.

The story missions are all cheap movie remakes. The character development is predictable as the day is long. The games over rated. I can't wait to see people cry about gta 6 being garbage. Rockstar does not give a shit unless your holding $$

I don't think Trevor hated Floydd. I think he liked having a simple idiot around who looked up to him. It seemed like he actually cared about him, but it was more like he was a pet than a human being. But he also treats him like shit. Makes him do all the crap things he doesn't want to do. He's played for jokes. Trevor is maddeningly inconsistent. There are moments of something interesting but most of them are overshadowed by trying to play things for laughs. I honestly don't think he's that complex.

The only thing I disagree with is Michael solely using Franklin, Michael personally vouches for Franklin which connects him with Lester which can net Franklin, and the others, 2 billion dollars and seeing as Lester only tells Franklin, if you have all three invest in the stocks I read it as Franklin told them to invest. Point is Michael warned Franklin what he would have to do but gave Franklin exactly what he asked for

Onlines story eventually wrapping up franklins story as him and Lamar using their warning to make a business for themselves where they help stop people from being robbed was a very nice thing to see

I get that the story might be mid but the music is just 😫 SO DAMN GOOD

I understand the game has a lot of underlying satirical elements that aren’t really “underlying” now that I think back. But I personally think the story as a story itself just isn’t that good. There’s no tension at all, never once did I feel that Trevor, Michael, and Franklin were in danger against the FIB. They literally just dick around the entire time, do some cool heist missions, and then decide to kill them all when you pick the ending that literally EVERYONE else picked. I know the story was trying to be more lighthearted compared to gta 4, but I think the darker tone of gta 4 made the more satirical moments stand out more and connect to the larger theme of the story being told. With gta 5 the story feels way too self aware that I just don’t care anymore.
