I've known about the Oort cloud for some time now, mainly that it extends out to about a light year (a number which this video revises for me).
But I really learned a lot of things I didn't know by watching this, especially in regard to Voyager's passage through the Oort cloud, and also the cloud's relationship to our nearest star, Proxima Centauri.

What is the estimate of the total mass of the Oort cloud? What are the bodies in the Oort cloud made of? rock (that is silica minerals) or metal (Iron and nickel, and heavier elements )? Given that the Oort cloud is mostly invisible to us, and assuming that other star systems are surrounded by similar clouds of matter, could this heavy matter, scattered around all the star systems be the Dark Matter hidden in the galaxies?

I know all about the Oort cloud. I have explored it many times and have seen every object in the universe. All it takes is a rocket ship, which I have.

The thing was that the IAU actually changed the definition of 'planet' to exclude Pluto specifically. If if was a planet, then so were the dozens of other similar sized objects in the Kuiper Belt.

We could either have eight planets or 60-odd and counting.

Is it believed that Alpha Centuri would also have an Oort cloud? If the Sol Oort cloud could potentially reach 3 light years that would mean an overlap with the Alpha Centuri Oort cloud since the distance between the stars is around 4 ly. And potentially collisions.

Very interesting video. I spend many hours when I can't sleep, looking up at the night sky, it seems impossibly huge, does it go forever, or is there a point where space ends? Either answer is mind boggling to say the least.

It is at least 2 or 3 feet wide.

The 2006 decision to reclassify Pluto was made on bullshit grounds by astronomers who mostly weren't planetary scientists, it's still a planet.

Were people just way smarter 150 years ago than they are now to figure this stuff out using the equipment of the period or what??

So then there must be quite a bit of overlap between our solar system and Alpha Centauri, but how can the outer areas of the oort cloud stay in orbit around the sun?

Our Solar system will grow so much bigger when we discover where planet 9 is. It has to be somewhere on the order of 15-18 thousands AU.

SPACE IS THREE DIMENSIONAL NOT TWO !!!!
The solar system is NOT TWO Dimensional, as frequently displayed, as in this programme !!! For the simply reason the SUN is hurtling along at roughly 2,000mph, as it is part of the SPIRALLING , Milky Way Galaxy. Which means if the Solar systems planets are not to get left behind, they too have to traverse both an Elliptical & SPIRAL path ! It's basic Mechanics ! Of course this realisation kicks "Gravity" into the dustbin. Gravity being a "Linear straight line" force cannot explain either our Suns, or the planets spiralling nature. But there is a force BILLIONS of times more powerful than Gravity which loves to Spiral, and it's called ELECTRICITY !!!!
