Part 3 | Trying to impress my asian parents with an 8-course Alaskan King Crab
Koi Palace is well known in the Bay Area for their incredible dim sum. But, did you know that these Cantonese restaurants serve things other than dim sum? This king crab feast is an example of some of the many incredible dishes that you can find (hidden) in these Cantonese restaurants, and if you aren’t Cantonese Chinese, or you’ve never experienced a Chinese-style banquet, it’s possible that this cuisine has completely flown under your radar.
In my opinion, Cantonese cuisine like this is seemingly underrated because it is fairly niche and to this day, it still holds some of my all-time favorite seafood dishes. But, I must confess that it is a cuisine that even I sometimes overlook because it can be incredibly difficult to order dishes if you don’t know how to ask the waiter in Chinese / Cantonese, and as an ABC, my Cantonese is unfortunately not very good (AKA trash).
So whenever I get the chance to hangout with my parents, I take the opportunity to explore Cantonese restaurants with them to get a taste of home. Fortunately, Koi Palace has a fairly English friendly menu so you needn’t shy away if you’re curious about this king crab course or any of their other dishes 🙂
