The Lumia 1020 was my first smartphone ever. Besides me liking the aesthetic of Windows Phone 8 very much (more than any other system), the camera was truely outstanding. So much so, that the phones I got after that - Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and then Note 8 - were very much disappointing me in their cameras, that were said to be some of the best in all phones. Windows Phone itself wasn't that much of a joy. Few apps and the OS lacking some of the most basic features.
The operating system was the sole reason, why I didn't care keeping the phone. And because it gave me a weird experience of what seemed to me like planned obsolesence. Only weeks before the 2 year warranty ran out, the screen started glitching, the graphics unit died. For technical reasons, that meant the whole motherboard AND screen needed to be replaced. What they did on warranty. They put those new components into my old shell, which basically meant a new phone. The old screen had burn-in by then, and with a brandnew one, I could then sell it for a good price.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 also smelled like planned obsolesence. Shortly after the 2 year warranty ending, the phone started to become unusable. It would randomly freeze for long periods of time, randomly shut off and sometimes not being able to boot. To this day I can't make out, if it was a software issue or hardware failure. I got the Note 8 at this point, and I thought, if that happens again, I will turn my back on Samsung.
It didn't. In fact, the Note 8 is a gorgeous phone. I still have it and it still runs perfectly 6 years after purchase. I only got a new phone because I started being a little uncomfortable with Android 9. But while it was in use every single day in those 6 years, it never let me down. Everything runs smooth, it can do everything you throw at it, it's awesome. It only got minor burn-in after 6 years (way less than the Lumia after 2 years). After 5 years, the battery really wasn't good anymore (randomly shutting off at 50% when it was a little chilly) and I went through the medium effort to switch it. With new battery, the phone is back to being awesome.

But despite the Note 8 being so good, I turned my back on Samsung. Because they are a soul-less, data-hogging corporation just like any other big corporation. And while their modified version of Android is indeed better than stock, it's beyond ridiculous to force the user to create a pointless Samsung account for basic functions AND even refusing to accept some mail adresses.

I was the diehard Symbian user till the end. The reason why I stuck to it and moved to Android instead of even thinking about switching to a Lumia was that Windows Phone simply lacked so many things that Symbian had. Microsoft should have allowed Nokia to put their own UI to the Lumia line and pack it with their own apps that every Symbian phone had

I had both. The 1020 was very good at what it was famous for but the Nokia themselves did not want to admit that the newer lumia was not as good as the outgoing 808. but it was. I had them side by side for couple of months, unless it was a bit dark outside the 808 beat the living crap of the 1020 in any shootout. It was in the league of its own. Did you mention the other wonderful feature of those phones: rich recording? The audio quality in videos produced by these things are unmatched even by todays smartphones. Period. I had them at some concerts and on the video I could hear every sound around me without any distortions no matter how loud it was. Good old Nokias, I miss the 808. btw that shape had something good to it, ergonomically it was nearly perfect. It fit your hands nicely, it was very balanced, that camera bump allowed you to hold the thing with one finger without falling anywhere, the curve of the back was perfect, every button had really nice feel, in easy reach and clicked soooo lovely, that slider to unlock the phone was great back then. Did I mention that those buttons and slider were out of stainless steel?

Damn I miss Windows Phone/Mobile. I think it was such a slick system that worked well. Wish more apps could have gotten on board to make it much more mainstream. The hardware was killer and the software was like butter. I still miss my Windows devices to this day.

Love this video! I still have my 808 and 1020 today. At times, i still used it. Freezing the water flow ans stopping the spin of a fan with its flash. The ND filter which most phone today do not have. The red eye remover light. And the half press to focus. Ah... so many features to mention. But, those were the days.

Phone cameras are a laughable, and the "41MP" thing is a JOKE. Read up just how they come up with that number and the real specs of the sensor. I can take better pictures with my FILM cameras than you can take with ANY phone camera (hint: it's just PHYSICS). LOL!!

For pc, windows and macos are duopoly. Android and ios are the only platforms. Smart watches only have wearos and apple. For servers, Linux rules. So there are only 2 or less for each form factor

To this day, the 1020XL was my favorite phone I've ever owned. I miss it badly, because I broke it one day and "upgraded" to an HP Elite X3, which I used until W10m stopped getting updated and finally it got too hard to use with modern systems and networks. I still miss Windows Phone and the Live Tiles, and haven't yet found a mobile OS I like even half as well.

Phone cameras are largely unimportant to me, yet you managed to keep me watching. A third major mobile OS would be swell to not be under the thumb of an oligopoly, yet I wouldn’t want it to be Microsoft. They have a track record for intensely anti competitive and consumer behavior when they gain too much control over a market.
