Thank you for this video. I learned a lot!
ОтветитьI like the straightforwardness and honesty of Paul Sellers. He is definitely not a shill for expensive tools like some of the others.
ОтветитьCodswallop —in the translation becomes 'cards wall up'! Hah! Great video.
ОтветитьI've done carpentry for over 40 years on and off; never once saw anyone use a belt sander to sharpen chisels or anything else - it is a myth! However, I have seen engineers sharpen tools with bench grinders because they are afraid to sharpen by hand.
ОтветитьThanks!
ОтветитьI used this video as a tutorial to sharpen my chisels. I works well, although I noticed the following things.:
1. My cheap chisels had a belly instead of a hollow…. It took a lot of time to get them flat! I wished I had been lucky and gotten hollow ground chisels!
2. Because of that(I think), I found it was easy to get the blade off square. Not sure how to deal with that.
Other than these items, I had no problems with this method and I have pretty sharp chisels now. They certainly work well enough, although Paul still makes using them look far easier than it really is. There’s something ineffable about experience and skill developed over years that can’t be imparted even through videos as excellent as this. This is not a complaint, my skill is an order of magnitude higher than before, but to get to a Master’s level, like Paul, requires a lot of work. I render vast amounts of respect! Thanks for the instruction.
Hey Paul, I just posted a picture on my community tab of a similar 6 piece set that I just purchased at our local Lidl grocery store here in the USA, which I purchased for $20! One of my subscribers directed me to your channel, and it appears to be a very similar, if not exact same Chisel. Great video! Scott.
ОтветитьToo much pressure on stropping.. stropping compound needs to be stored clean to avoid contamination with sand , dust .. etc
ОтветитьYou give me the oak and you pay for the oak and I'll show you it'll do oak too . Classic !
ОтветитьI don't like this at all
ОтветитьI sharpen tools to the shape that you use, but I was taught by an old carpenter when I was 7, he used a stone, but I have long used wet & dry paper as well as a stone.
ОтветитьExcellent
Thank you
Subscribed 👍
Paul, thank you very much for this video…I thought I knew how to sharpen…I stand corrected! You are a master!
ОтветитьAfter All that work I would not want to don’t use it 😂
ОтветитьI get inexplicably excited about seeing a cheapo Chrome Vanadium chisel razor-sharp enough to perform all the tasks any over-priced high-carbon steel chisel will!
Ответитьawesome, I am building my work bench, i actually got my Free piece of Glass already, you are awesome, i was afraid of buying those types of Chisels but as i am on a budget that is what i am going to do.
If possible can you post what is the material they are made off? 1070, tool steel...
wickid awesome
ОтветитьThank you, I learned a huge amount from this and will put this into practice tomorrow morning!
ОтветитьPaul is the roll Royce of every carpenter in the world!

ОтветитьBack for a refresher, it always does me good! Thanks again for sharing your time and talent! KANSAS USA
Ответитьit still absolutely baffls me that there are people who still use imperial mesurements in Europe.
ОтветитьSadly, no longer carried by Aldi's. But I bought some big box Marples Irwin on close out. So I'm set.
ОтветитьБез всяких приспособ! 👍
ОтветитьSuperb guidance👍
Ответитьat first, I thought that you were doing it wrong because of the way you were grinding the chisel on that sandpaper but then the resulting sharpness got me by surprise.
ОтветитьCraft secrets, keep going to your arm gets sore, fantastic, what a pro, thanks for this
Ответитьgreat info, thanks for the video!!
ОтветитьI had a piece of glass lying around and I never thought I would ever use it for anything. But here we are.
ОтветитьA true craftsman. Honest, helpful, kind, and skilled. Thank you for sharing sir! I just bought a chisel and was getting so frustrated at how it was working, now I'm excited to sharpen it and give it another try. Thanks!
ОтветитьI love this video, because woodworking can become very expensive. But a chisel can be affordable and very useful, and you go through how to do this on a budget. And you talk about what you are looking for, like the curve of the chisel, how to find flat surfaces etc.
So great content but also made accessible to the beginner.
La leçon d'un Maitre, le savoir de cet homme nous ramène aux fondamentaux de notre métier, après 30 ans de carrière, je vous dis merci Mr Sellers.
ОтветитьI've been waiting for these chisels to come into my local Aldi for over a year! i go in every Saturday just to see. Well, yes obviously I'm buying beer while I'm in there, but no chisels! They'll turn up one day. I keep buying odd chisels while I'm waiting and now I have, like, twenty...
ОтветитьThank you for this excellent tutorial. Question: can I use emery paper instead of the wet/dry sandpaper?
ОтветитьThanks, very much, Mr. Sellers
ОтветитьThank you Paul for your very clear instructions on how to sharpen chisels! I have seen som many videos and they only confused me. Just one thing: what is a camber?
Ответитьi was tempted to buy cheap chizels n then sharpen tjem. then i asked a joiner i worked with n he suggested irwin maple. bought them 45 quid for 4 with oil n polish sharpening stone. snd a roller. not that sharp on first use. ile sharpen them one day. msy buy cheap ones forv regularl ulse use. ee will see
ОтветитьGreat video, I am learning to get over my fear of chisels.
ОтветитьIts not the tool, its the man holding it
ОтветитьWatching the video’s on this channel has made life a lot easier and I enjoy watching and learning from them all thanks for sharing your knowledge I only wish I took up wood working a long time ago.
ОтветитьThanks for the video. To viewers, you may like to see Rex Kruger's channel for a more recent comment on diamond plates. Over time, since the date of this good video, some diamond plates have come down in price to remarkable levels, Kruger remarks. Meanwhile everything else in this video is the same I have been doing in woodworking for decades, spot on.
ОтветитьI think that I have to start all over again. I thought I was sharpening chisels well, but they don't do what your Aldis have demonstrated Paul
ОтветитьBuying good steel and heat treating it properly, doesn't really cost any more than buying bad steel and heat treating it poorly. You really pay for the handle and for having it hand-finished. And these days, machines can slap on a handle just as well as a human can. So it's really only the final sharpening you're paying for when you buy expensive chisels
ОтветитьIf on your journey you should encounter GOD, GOD will be cut!
ОтветитьDid this. Sides became so sharp that you bleed when chiseling and holding the blade.
ОтветитьNot only is this video showing us how to sharpen chisels, it's also showing us that we don't have to spend a fortune on tools to achieve fantastic results. One other thing that stands out about Mr Sellers' videos is the absence of noise from machines which allows us to clearly hear what this man has to say. A true gentleman and artisan with a love of sharing his knowledge to anyone that is willing to learn which is why I'll always keep coming back to this channel.
ОтветитьExcellent! Thank you.
