I lived there drom 94 to 99 and i can confirm this country can be dangerous. I lived in observatory, a nice area but i was scared to go berea, hillbrow, downtown and some part of yeoville alone...right now even observatory, bruma, kensington etc are bad...jozy has gone really bad with crimes

There is nothing wrong in walking alone in the streets of Johannesburg. We live here and walk alone everyday. Why people expect negative things to happen is beyond me. If it was so dangerous to live in South Africa, there wouldn’t be 60 million people living here, not counting millions of illegal foreigners and tourists living here. If crime happens, it happens not because you are a foreigner but because criminals can pounce on any one in Johannesburg, just as it happens in New York, Lagos, Accra, Moscow and anywhere else. That is why the world has cops.
