Systems design interview with a Google engineer: Distributed databases

Interviewer is clearing telling him to talk about Sharding and consistent hashing. How clear and helpful he can be?

partition by userid(mapping to clearname by seperated table) and stoe all transaction of this user together, and all the users in a single giant table. Split the data(if too hot and big) based on size until range is only spans users data and transactions. maximum scale with minium work upfront.

I think he came up with genuine ideas short of consistent hashing. I would vote yes for him. He isn’t mumbling, but has accent, which is fine and interviewer got what he’s saying, so 🤷‍♀️

There is a 10000 ft distance between the knowledge of interviewer and interviewee.

I wish I ever get interviewed by such interviewer, as he is guiding and helping a lot. This interviewee is plain irritating, just giving plain vanilla answer despite so much hints

The interviewee is just beating around bush with theory, while interviewer is giving many hints, for me it would be over in first 10 mins with such answers, you should take historical backup based on access pattern, analyse the accesses and keep pushing old data to appropriate store..and he is not talking about it

If the interviewee said at the beginning that he is going to shard the db based on primary key, then how would the interview go from there ?

The feedback given was not comprehensive. Also, I felt interviewer gave a sugar coated feedback.

Maybe Consistent Hashing will simplify it, the interviewer very nicely coached him in the end with the solution. I really liked how the interviewer tried to help and guide the candidate. I will love to hire the interviewer.

So, if this was an actual interview, what would you say about his chances? I would have thought consistent hashing etc. are pretty basic concepts.
