General personality disorder- Criteria
A. An enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the
expectations of the individual's culture.
So, for example, trying desperately to save your child's life doesn't count as a trait of BPD, because it doesn't deviate markedly from cultural expectations.
B. The enduring pattern is inflexible and pervasive across a broad range of personal and
social situations.
Having a long unstable relationship with your lovers doesn't count as a trait of BPD, because it was just with your lovers and not with your friends, coworkers, strangers, etc.
C. The enduring pattern leads to clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational,
or other important areas of functioning.
Otherwise, it is technically not a mental disorder. The diagnosis of a mental disorder is not a label we put on people who are different. It is to help people get help for their issues.
D. The pattern is stable and of long duration, and Its onset can be traced back at least to
adolescence or early adulthood.
So, from time to time, or just after a recent traumatic event, it doesn't count as BPD.
E. The enduring pattern is not better explained as a manifestation or consequence of another
mental disorder.
F. The enduring pattern is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g.,
a drug of abuse, a medication) or another medical condition (e.g., head trauma).
But they can co-occur with BPD. But know that bipolar disorder, substance abuse disorder, major depression, rarely bring frantic efforts to avoid abandonment for example.
