Great job, Brad!
ОтветитьDudes click click boom
ОтветитьGreat Interview Brad ! I can relate to so many things you both mentioned ! I'll just try to comment on one: The 'Studio thing' used to be expensive, and serious , so when you went into the studio, you had to be on the top of your game, usually 'live' ! To this day, I still record with my occasional bands 'Live', no punching, errors are kept as a proof it was played by Humans !
I produced one of my records (meaning , I payed for everything), in 93, it was so diverse in styles that the 'all' the A&R guys told me : "we love what you do, but we don't know in which box we can put you "! That was the point, we didn't wanted to be classified . Our 'public' use to come to our concerts, without knowing how it was going to be... They just knew they were in for an adventurous sonic treat and a great night !
Take care, stay Human !
ps sorry for my long comments...!
Funny story, I used Fisherman's Friend (those are strong !), in order to keep me awake, when driving for long hours , lol ! Those impose respect...!
ОтветитьEvery interview has a good flow, reading the room whether music or a podcast is what you do so well. Production comments are interesting. I came off a session last year did an average of 4 takes max per song. Drum tracks were already set and recorded a month earlier , drummerwas very ill & sadly passed a month after our last session. Producer -engineer worked with the singer on all her takes, try this, sing this part etc. He didn’t change my parts, I rehearsed my parts intensively fora few weeks. Guitarist had several takes as the producer - engineer had some great ideas for pedal tones from his collection (he was in a 🇨🇦 touring band did Ozzfest in 2000 recorded on Ozzie’s label. ) His did a great job guiding the session
ОтветитьGreat interview, I really enjoyed listening to this one.
ОтветитьI would prefer Tracii Guns as Micks touring replacement only. A 5 and a 6 in the same band is ...not cool, imo.
ОтветитьGreat show!
ОтветитьOne last comment... After all the adventures I had playing music, I had the chance, for a while, to play with a quiet well known commercial band (in Portugal). The conditions I experienced then, were nothing like the experience a 'day to day musician lives'... In a regular concert day ,the roadies would take care of all the gear and leave earlier, the road manager would pass by your house to pick you at 10 o'clock & would take care of everything for you ! You would check in at the hotel (usually decent and paid by the production), driven to the venue for sound check (or just a line check), brought back to the hotel for free time, and then brought to the venue in time, to make your show (45mn !) , drove back to the hotel, and the next day drove home while the roadies install your gear at your rehearsal place for practicing, and do it all again. It was well payed, played lots of big festivals, opened for a lot of huge world touring bands. The band was very successful (remember I told you I won a Golden Globe, that I never got, for 'best live band of the year'). But , the guys in the band, didn't cared about the Music and were a bit... pedantic (?) ! They were in it for the Fame , the Glory , their egos... I didn't stay for very long , but it was interesting to try, for a while !
Fortunately, I had 4 or 5 projects aside, way more interesting, musically and humanely. It didn't payed as much or not at all, but humanly and artistically, it was way more interesting !
Take care !
James Michael seems super cool and I like the SixAM albums.
Thanks for having him on and for your super cool channel
Great Interview. Is there a way to get in touch with J Michael ? Dm if me if possible.
ОтветитьSounds like James has found the right balance of music and life....salute to you both and thanks for sharing these stories with us.
ОтветитьGhost are iconic. Some of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
ОтветитьYou have a strong future in the interviewing game, you can teach a G chord, but you cant teach charisma or how to be a good conversationalist, you're a natural, the more you break into different genre's of guests, the more the channel will grow.
ОтветитьDamn this is killer Brad , but I woke late.n gotta load up for the dump then Sundays jam..
Full house tonight 3 guitars keys two drummers. And my favorite local bass player.
I'll have to finish this later tonight.. Shit. I wanna lay in bed and watch the whole thing rn though , your killin it brother .
Great conversation! Very enjoyable. Cheers guys! 👍👊🎸🎧
ОтветитьJames killed on the vocals on that first Sixx AM release, it's exceptional. BB, the rock/roll whisperer.
ОтветитьEnjoyed the interview! I seen 6am a couple of times. damn good band in the days.
ОтветитьBrad ... Thank you for this. James is such an amazing talent and incredible human being. What a tremendous 90 minutes of stories and memories.
ОтветитьIncredible interview Brad. James is such an amazing person and singer. So down to Earth and thoughtful.
Won’t get into the long story but Sixx AM’s music was so meaningful to me and my wife in the hardest year of our life. During that time we got to see Sixx AM live and James’ voice was surreal. Made us forget our struggles for a night and feel invincible. Grateful to hear his voice in my lifetime.
👍
ОтветитьGreat interview, great topics. A lot to unpack. I think we need legislation to get rid of the monopolies in radio for one, like max six stations, regional again. Too many things. Even now, a big Producer in Nashville wrote on his FB, he actually did a record with a great new female vocalist who did not need vocal correction software, but label rejected the album and asked him to run it through the software even if no correction because it would be rejected at the platforms because it did not have the software tone. But, national playlists and mega label control down to a few companies locks up a lot of expression.
ОтветитьThe whole “iconic” thing…. “People don’t know what they like….they like what they know.” Someone or something becomes iconic because you’ve seen it so many times that it’s been drilled into your brain. There were only so many ways to experience popular culture back in the day. We were fed SO much of the same experience via media. Nowadays it’s quite a bit different, but…… “There’s nothing new under the sun.” Folks think that the internet deals with satellites, but it’s actually just the telegraph on steroids, as far as the logistics of how it’s done. The only satellites that exist are attached to weather balloons. If there were thousands of geostationary satellites, you’d be able to see one pass in front of the moon at some point (especially with a telescope). Anyway….🤷♂️😁
ОтветитьThe fact that Nashville has venues that only do cover bands is stupid. The city is full of musicians who do original music yet play only covers live and try to get their original music out through other means. If I owned a club, especially one with multiple floors and stages, I would be the only one who had original music. I know that tourists are pretty “samey” and most want to hear stuff they know, but it’s “music city”… There has to be a place where the true music lovers could go to and experience original music…at least on a stage or 2. I would zag while the others zig. There’s always a place for the alternative. I can imagine that there’s got to be folks who ask the bartender, “This cover stuff is done well, but where can I see some unique, original music?” Bartender (or local):”Well, there this one place down the way that’s the only place where there’s original bands/artists being featured.” Call me crazy, but there always needs to be a place to showcase original music. I’m that guy who’s sick of AC/DC, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Joan Jett, classic rock, etc.
Ответитьmajor label music died with the Telecommunications Act of 1996
Ответитьthe gradual decline into transhumanism has led to shitty music.
ОтветитьProbably your best interview Brad!🎉
ОтветитьAnother well curated interview. Hopefully James Michael will be back. Thanks!
ОтветитьGreat conversation filled with so much insight. kudos …
ОтветитьI visited Sunset Strip in 2000. By then, it was dead. The magic was gone. DJ's, Limewire, mp3s, Napster and rap had firmly beaten down the past. The best part was looking over the the city of L.A. from the rooftop pool at the Valadon hotel. I remember walking by the Whiskey and a band was loading in the drums, etc. I felt bad for them and had zero interest in the old room.
ОтветитьThis episode is among your best work Brad.
Excellent conversation between two contemporaries.
I felt like I was sitting with you two guys at a table in a restaurant, just listening.
Oh man this got raallly really good.
Almost midnight, ugh 5hr jam tonight most excellent.. Not counting travel.
I was like,”George Michael! Idk!?” Then I thought “I got to have faith faith faith, I got to have faith ,faith faith in Brad ,baby!”… turns out I was right to trust you. Not George Michael 🫢😂
ОтветитьI feel an example of pure just natural stage presence is Sam Bam Koltun he’s a younger guitarist I’ve seen him live many times and he always blows me away with how happy and cool he looks on stage always jumping around and right in your face guitar tone. I know he probably just didn’t wake up with this level of stage presence he probably worked on it he just has that natural coolness and makes it look so fun while playing killer guitar
ОтветитьBrad I was so stoked when I saw this was coming, It didn’t disappoint, great conversation with James Michael. I’ve been so impressed with that dude, great writer, producer, genuine nice guy but the way he sings in my opinion he has the perfect dynamic rock singer. I got to see Sixx Am live once, so great!
ОтветитьDuuuuuuuude,
Excellent video!!!
Thanks Brad!
Great interview! Love the personal backstories. Touching on some of what was mentioned, the fact that all music has become homogenized and genreless also leads me to believe something "big" is around the corner, sort of like a pressure cooker about to blow. And yes James, I do believe music is cyclical. The key here is dopamine. Something needs to come along (a) that never has been done before, and (b) gives kids more dopamine to pry them away from little screens! Also when Brad mentions that things are too sexy, I think it's less about that, and more about things are too choreographed and mechanical...nothing is spontaneous anymore, like an Elvis, James Brown, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, etc, where they just feel/react to the music. Once you have all those things, then you'll have your next Elvis, Beatles, Sunset Strip, etc, to revolutionize the music world!
ОтветитьThis was great! I would love to know how he wound up in Derry Ireland though.
ОтветитьGreat conversation. Love that you’re comparing experiences.
ОтветитьTook me 3 times to get thru this one lol.
What a banger. I really like this dude.
He's intelligent personable knowledgeable. And so easy to communicate with.
Dude this came.out great brother Brad.
The 90s were fun in LA! I missed the 80s but I bet it was awesome
ОтветитьGreat interview!
ОтветитьMusic isn't as important as it was in our time cause back then in my experience it was you either played sports or played an instrument not to mention rock/heavy metal ruled the world! It was every where! I remember standing in front of my high school waiting for my ride and Metallica's .....And Justice For All was being blasted out of EVERY kid's car leaving school! In my year book every guy had long hair with a metal shirt on and all the girls had the high aqua net hair, nowadays it's nowhere it seems rap has taken over the world now! It's a shame really cause it was definitely a ri.e to be alive! Oh....I played in a touring band from '92 to 2004 and rock was packing the venues but I seen karaoke and rap starting to take over and by 2004 it was flaming out and life took over plus we weren't really going anywhere so I got out of it but I still play when I can but there isn't that much interest in live music much anymore and it really sucks!! By the way I'm 50 now and my band back in the day was Servent Fear.
ОтветитьWhoa, this was awesome. What a good dude.
ОтветитьYeah, I know James...I can hardly remember anything about my musical journeys...NO! I did not do drugs (well just a little bit)...Strange. Brad is amazing.
ОтветитьJames Michael had a such a unique experience as a music engineer that could sing, and
so he ends up in a metal band with Nikki Sixx as the singer. Happy retirement James, just
amazing. I've been a fan of Motley Crue since the early 80's and didn't check out Sixx A.M.
but I will sometime, so keep rocking and teaching the kids / young musicians.
Great Interview, Kudos !!!
ОтветитьThanks!
ОтветитьGreat interview!!
