Albert Akapite Wamiri Jr.: A young Papua New Guinea coffee visionary

Meet Albert Akapite Wamiri Jr., a 24-year-old visionary with roots in both the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea and Fiji, who is leading the charge to transform PNG’s coffee industry. Fresh from earning a business degree from the University of the South Pacific, Albert Jr. has returned to his homeland with a mission: to breathe new life into the Anego Coffee Plantation in Kabiufa, working side by side with his father, Albert Akapite Wamiri.

With unwavering passion, a commitment to his community, and the backing of the Coffee Industry Corporation Ltd (CICL) - PNG Agriculture Commercialisation and Diversification (PACD) Project, Albert Jr. is determined to make Anego a beacon of excellence in PNG's coffee industry. On September 4, 2024, the plantation signed a K432,000 agreement with CICL-PACD, with a shared goal of boosting coffee production and expanding their reach to international markets by next year.

The support from the PNG Government and the World Bank through PACD is about more than just coffee—it's about empowering young leaders like Albert Jr., increasing economic opportunities for local farmers, and building a sustainable future for PNG’s agricultural sector. The goals are ambitious:

- To increase coffee production and market access

- To improve the quality and transparency of the product

- To create income-generating opportunities for local communities

- To boost productivity and reduce post-harvest losses
