With decades of mechanical, advanced material new product development, testing, failure analysis and quality control manufacturing engineering experience, this entire program was doomed day one by rookie mistakes and what appears to be rampant greed and corruption on all levels.

Valid oversight would have killed this doomed program before it started:

A basic understanding of Chemistry, mechanical and nautical engineering, survivability and lethality would’ve prevented one of the largest blunders in US Navy history.

Incompetency is no excuse for absolute stupidity, blatant greed and unacceptable government waste on all levels.

USN tried to make a fast shallow draft bass boat into a off shore fishing boat, with options to use drag net, troll lines, gill nets, harpoon, even crab pots. It's a failure concept from the beginning. But the idiots in the Navy and government sold this failure to the idiots in the Congress. Shit happens. 🤔🤨🙄😎

Lousy oversight, planning, research/development. Lack of a defined mission. Freedom should have been the combat ships, properly equipped. The Independence class should've been for mine countermeasures. The government, as usual, screwed it all up.

Modular can work......
If only the US navy had just copied Stanflex.

But no, that's not conducive to spending $ on contractors.

Also the very idea of assigning mine clearance and ASW to >45 knot ships is ludicrous. Wasted machinery space as both jobs are at odds with high speeds.

Mines are static and high speed = noise = not picking up the Submarine.

While some versatility is a good idea.....

Small ships are ideal for giving officers command experience.

So dedicated Mine hunters and big PT boats to combat small craft are not a bad idea.

Some 50 to 60 yard Corvette with a 76mm cannon and surveilance/armed drones could lob guided cannon shells some 15 to 20 miles. Add stuff like Brimstone/Spear (EW) and it'll even be versatile in combatting larger ships.

A 76mm cannon is good enough for air defence in combo with a SEA-RAM.
2-4 Cell VLS with 8 quad packed ESSM and perhaps some extra missiles could enable the Navies oft quoted distributed lethality.

i wonder what it would cost to turn the retired ships into commercial or private craft? what is funny that the module system was built on top of the ship, you'd think it would be something along the side or rear of it. were there is better access and potentially just being able to shed it similarly to a life raft sort of system... and a winch lift system to bring the other one into position, that was fully loaded. to be locked into place. but i mean idk what the packages were suppose to encompass so maybe that was not practical? hell i'm one who would take two ships and put them together like a catamaran where they were above the waves and use the central canal as a means of lifting materials and such aboard, i even envisioned it being like a dry dock for a submarine. imagine two warships next to each other using a centralized dock /platform between them that has a sub winched up unloading supplies or materials... the subs could have even acted as these modules./weapons packages etc.
