URBAN FANTASY RELOADED - Terrible Writing Advice

So I read this urban fantasy book called I Was A Teenage Weredeer. It had some pretty interesting elements, fine world building and a plot that actually was kind of cool.

However.

It is completely ruined because the author decided to put in a pop culture reference every other paragraph.

DO NOT INCLUDE REAL LIFE PEOPLE INTO YOUR URBAN FANTASY WORLDBUILDING, ESPECIALLY IF THEY DON’T DO ANYTHING.

What would be funny is after looking through a witches lair, seeing all sorts of made up potions, he finds one that he initially doesn’t understand at first? only to realize it’s weed.

Maybe just me but The Caster. Chronicles did a alright job at upending the YA trope apple cart

I saw the character connection chart and it first thought the example character was bisexual for some reason.

Made me think of one of my favorite urban fantasies the utterly uninteresting and unadveturous of fred the vampire accountant. Where we follow around a vampire accountant that eventually gets married, its really sweet and cool.

Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans

. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.

If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).

He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.

He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.

He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.

Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]

NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.

About the representation racism and such you should have just said: " just pick some elf/orc/whatever group to be "black americans" of your story, this seems to work fine for big boys like netflix so you should do great with it as well" short and fitting

This sounds like Dresden's files if it was badly written.

Meanwhile my dumbass: Okay so get this, the main character is about to fail university because of a math exam they haven't studied for that will happen in two weeks, so of course they do the only logical thing and spend two weeks frantically getting together some stuff required to summon a very powerful entity, according to this super old book they found in their grandmas attic and it works and before them stands an actual goddess who tells them the two weeks could have been better spent studying for the exam, but agrees to help anyways, so long as after that she gets to actually teach him the math that's going to be on the exam and they never cheat again and then they pass out during the exam, wake up just in time to hand it in and get a perfect score and the goddess declares herself their tutor and will not accept anything less than a perfect score on any upcoming exam, but in exchange will arrange living arangements and funds. Also she expects some worship out of it, because that's ultimately what's powering her and why she even bothered to answer the summon in the first place: to get more powerful. The protagonist who is a complete dumbass, in case that wasn't clear up until now, decides that "So this lady showed up here, helped me on one exam and is now offering me a deal that is not binding, but she absolutely has the higher leverage so if she alters the deal all I can do is pray she does not alter it further all to gain power to do idk what with? Yup, seems legit!" and then a dragon attacks the university.

Ahh yes, urban fantasy. A thrilling analysis of a young woman's choice between necrophilia or bestiality.

Why not just have them always wear a t-shirt and shorts? Y'know, like is common in this period? It could emphasise the way the character is a modern person, or have them wear a sweatshirt with it if they're from a certain area of California!

Edit: It would also let the character appear more normal, not particularly fussed about their appearance.

One thing that pisses me off about diversity is...

Why even make an Urban area? Just take the unending amounts of Hicky US towns. Make your main characters two family members that actually only live on the road because hunting down monsters is so important for them. And since side-characters are either going to die or die / Return on a neverending cycle you can REALLY flesh out the family drama for the weird shippers that really wanna see those two family members GET DOWN.

You can even throw shitloads of christian symbology into the pot! Working your way up from the typical urban legend to FIGHTING GOD in the last seaso....

missing person of the week bleeds into monster of the week: the missing person and their "kidnapper" turn out to be two monstrous friends that came up with the scenario as a way to lure people (maybe specifically the hard boiled detective protagonist, maybe any monster hunter, maybe just anyone who qualifies as a meal to a human-eating variety) to their doom, and it turns into a dual boss fight with the real monsters of the week
macguffin/plot coupon quest villain vs magical whodonit villain: one of the plot coupons requires the life of a specific person to function, but that person has murder plots about them for a completely separate reason. the coupon villain, who is racing to collect the plot coupons before the coupon heroes do, must form a temporary alliance with the heroes as they both keep the person coupon alive despite the whodunnit villain's best attempts. meanwhile the whodunnit hero is solving a murder in the person coupon's house that shares a motive with the ongoing plot

I got it, my protag doesn't fight the elves because they kidnap people, but because they are leftists that Said orange man bad too many times. Now my guy is good because his magical gun ( and voice in his head) said so and because he protects his neighbors lawn gnomes.

Imagine an Urban fantasy setting where dealing with whatever supernatural bullshit is a minimum wage job. So when the protagonist first encounters something out of the norm (aka the first signs of the big bad) they just decide they don't get paid enaugh for this shit and leave. And they continuously refuse to engage with the plot because they're having a day off and they fucking earned it, ok? Laso they are very old. Like in their sixties or something. Cause it's funny.

For a book what if gangsters Urban Crime but one of the gangs the one in charge starts in the bottom a 14 year old with the ability too absorbent materials and rocks coat his entire skin in metal or just certain parts the store would take place in the 70s and 2000s what name would I give him maybe copper platinum or freak if an actual name maybe Troy

Maybe try reading the dresen files or iron druid chronicles. Hell, the dresden files is the biggest series by far in urban fiction and none of your tropes sticks to that series. Not even the "ThErE Is nO WoRlDbUiLdInG."

Am I the only one who wants to write an urban fantasy story where the magic and fantasy is out in the open, and really just serves as a setting. Like, where Walmart and CVS has fur shampoo for werewolves, satyrs and kitsune, there are special cars made for centaurs, and there’s just a culture of unicorn racing in Kentucky. That kind of thing?

Wow you could almost perfectly lampoon the genre with a parody where the werewolf and vampire try to pull each other down in order to get that girl that can't make facial expressions... The werewolf puts garlic powder in the vampire's food at lunchtime, or the vampire has erectile dysfunction since he's like 200 years old, or the werewolf can't stop humping the protagonist's leg/sniffing classmate's butts. Could do a whole movie like this.
