The Phalanx didn't lose because the Roman legions were superior and more flexible. They lost because their leader was oblivious to changing situations, attacked before he had his reserves situated or his army concentrated, didn't have flexible command structure with subordinates who could take the initiative. This same army under Alexander would not have made those mistakes and would have won. His commanders were all capable leaders in their own right, and Alexander understood the strengths and weaknesses of his phalanx. Rome simply had a better leadership and training structure. None of the Successors to Alexander had his gifts of strategy and tactics, simply aping Alexander in everything. They made stupid decisions, took insane risks and they had no backup plan. For example, they copied Alexander's choice of commanding the cavalry on the right flank as a position of honor. They copied Alexander's example of leading his men on attacks. Alexander did this to emulate his hero Achilles. But, he had a backup plan and he had great generals behind him who could take over the army when he died. Not his fault that they all decided they could be Alexander and began in fighting. It was inevitable. Anyway, it would have been great if Alexander and Caesar or any competent Roman General could have faced each other on equal standing. That would have been an awesome battle.

Pride leads to stupidity which was Phillip's downfall. Never underestimate your enemy, and always attack with full force.

It annoys me the most that people, "historians" and game makers do not know the difference between a phalanx and a pike formation.

The kings period roman legion was equal to the greek phalanx army. But the roman discovered , going to batte with the Sannites that it was useless in to the hilly and moutainious land of central Italy. So they changed and adapted. This has always been one of the segret of the roman s legion. The new legion was far more capable to adapt to different terrain . The phalanx was capable to fight on only one type of terrain : flat plain. The romans were very capable to use this disadvantage of the phalanx.

These romans that were saved by this pro-roman move that this tribune came up with must've been so high on morale and good spirits just seeing your army coming back from behind and saving your ass

How do the Macedonians lose occupying the high ground? Yes they were outnumbered but the idiot who fled (after being charged) cost them victory in account of his cowardly nature. Shameful.

He couldn’t have been very intelligent ; all he had to do was call in the 1st Air Cav and a few Huey’s and Cobra gunships would have sent the elephants and men in sandals running for their lives !

After sending the first wave of reinforcements, Phillip should have took the remainder of his forces and flanked around to the rear and attacked the Roman camp directly. Pinching the Romans.

Diadochi generals after Alexander: cavalry? whats that? defending flanks? what? You mean charge the flanks into their flanks and lose the cavalry battle before the battle even starts? (battle of magnesia) Alexander and his companion cavalry all rolling in their graves in every battle of the diadochi.

while this is the best example we have it is worth noting that the roman side did have larger numbers as well as what could be considered "heavy calvary" in its war elephants during the battle so while the romans did win mostly due to the slow movements of the Macedonian left flank they did also have some advantages before the battle begun. As well as this the first engagement of the two main lines did show minor success of the phalanx formation allbeit with assistance from the incline.

You know what’s funny, I remember a historian saying about the Macedonians: “You are carrying a 14 meter spear, you just can’t turn around.” I can imagine a Macedonian soldier just swinging his pike around and then making other soldiers fall in the process.

I didn't watched the video yet, but the Legion probaly would win from Phalanx, if the greeks was smarter, getting bigger shields and shorter spears they would have bigger chances against the roman empire.
