The hook ball is thrown the way it always has been, with the thumb approximately at ten to eleven o’clock and the fingers in the opposite region, about four to five o’clock. The one-handers do not have their fingers below the equator of the ball. The camera is too high to show what is really going on, and it only looks like the fingers are under the ball. Only a bowler who doesn’t use a thumb hole can release the ball with the fingers below the equator. Please watch what is happening here, instead of making assumptions based upon what everyone is saying. Open your eyes and see where the fingers and thumb are positioned when the ball actually leaves the hand. And put the camera six inches off the floor so you can see that the fingers are not beneath the equator. All that wristy stuff and the bent elbow occur before the release point. And bending the elbow will cause you to lose your true pendulum swing and muscle the ball.

I’m not saying that it’s wrong to do things this way. Do whatever works for you. But stop spreading misinformation about bowling. For a one-hander using a thumb hole, the thumb must be around ten to eleven o’clock and the fingers opposite that at the release point. It’s always been that way, and it probably always will.
