I'm an American of German heritage. Bernhardt with a smidge of Welsh thrown in. This song hits me hard. It is evocative, rhythmically entrancing, and heart rendering. The tune is one of a kind, a kind that grabs you and evokes an emotion. I despise what the Nazis did to Germany and left her to live down the infamy which will take centuries. Shameful. But I remain proud of my heritage and my family which escaped the madness to come to America. Nevertheless I remind myself not often enough: I am German and proud.

But what is the overall meaning and context ? A prediction of WWII ? A prediction of cruel repression ? A preduction of an iron will and a brilluant economic reform ? A preduction of the end of the bankrupt Weimar Republic and the crooks that run it ?

Es lebe das Leben in aller Ewigkeit bis zur Unsterblichkeit.

The parallels to our time are so exact, it's terrifying.

Als ich "Babylon Berlin" im öffentlich- rechtlichen Rundfunk im Jahr 2018 sah, war ich hin und weg!
Nach der Ausstrahlung des 1. Teil MUSSTE ich mir vieles in Erinnerung rufen, über das was man im Geschichtsunterricht und durch die Erzählungen von Grosseltern über die Zeit vom Ende des Deutschen Kaiserreich bis zur Entstehung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Zeitschiene: ~ 1912 - 1949) hörte. Nachbarn meiner Eltern - die als "Heimkehrer" in den 50er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts - taten Ihr Übriges an ERzählungen dazu bei.
Die Geschichte der "Deutschen", Ihre Allianzen mit verschiedenen Staaten (Türkei, Russland, Argentinien etc. Beispiel: deutsch-türkische Beziehungen im 11. Jahrhundert, Katharina die 2., Familie Eva & Juan Perón - um NUR mal welche zu benennen) war auch die Geschichte von Menschen die ein- bzw ausgewandert waren - wie es auch heute noch vereinzelt geschieht.
Da geht mir dann auch das Herz auf, wenn eine Frau Severija Janušauskaitė (aus Litaunen stammend) mit Ihrer unverkennbaren Stimme, mit einem Orchester so ein Lied darbietet.

Knowing the fact the Great War follows makes this show all the more haunting...

I did like how national socialists were just in background mostly. It showed a clear picture, that terrible things would have happened even if Hitler and others didn't exist. Berlin would be violent place with or without them. Who knows, maybe even civil war.
