Traction control should replace the diff lock for new 4wd. Why would TC be included with all 4wd modes? TC prevents drive slip by stopping the free spinning wheel. This saves the extra modification to diffs to achieve all wheels driving regardless. I cant understand why TC is switched of in critical situations. Do they have test tracks after their assembly lines???

I first met Shaun Whale at a 4x4 show in Brisbane 6 years ago. We got to chatting about Hilux's and met for coffee that night. We went for a walk in the park, talked about wheeling, held hands and watched the sunset. Shaun is an amazing guy and I will never forget that day.

triton has best reliability and customer care for sure but i still think it could be heaps better. i dont understand why mitsy have not taken it to the next level. they know they can wipe the floor with all the others but just have an agenda thats set to be the greenest and thats it. to keep that 2.4 ( yes its been more given more power etc etc), but i still feel they have slapped the mitsy purist in the face. may be enough power for most but i still feel dissapointed. anyhow thats my rant.

First and second place are vehicles built by manufacturers that have terrible reliability history... make sure you sell them before the warranty runs out to people who have no idea how terrible they'll be out of warranty 😅😅

Great comparison, thanks. As a recent BT50 buyer... I'd have been interested in a more comprehensive look at all the driver assist tech in these and how useful or intrusive they are. They are definitely not all created equal

Such a large test but considering 80-90% of use is just driving around town in and out of traffic you didn’t cover any of that? Things like the latest hilux takes 3-4 seconds to get going when you stamp the throttle this gets tiresome when you drive a lot. Also the driver distraction monitor in each what’s it like? Lane departure in the new ranger is actually awesome whereas the hilux tried to swerve me off the road at a corner.

Are they utes or tarted up show ponies that never go off road.
To be objective should have got the base model from all brands not the over priced top of the line.

The only truck worth looking at is the ranger/VW. The rest look a generation old with tiny engines.

About 5 secs on towing and all we got to see was the Ford.
Would have been useful to see each model towing about 2.5t.

Should have been titled, End of an era. The new generation of utes coming on stream will smash all of these guys. All of the big names have been raking in the dollars for a couple of badges, stickers and bigger wheels. When you're all singing from the same book of hymens, it opens the door for some shark to rip the competition apart. New companies are going to eat them alive with better tech, quality interiors, more power, warranty and when it come to value for money, these old trucks will be left sitting in showrooms. Those that are silly enough to have brand loyalty will be left in the dust.

Whenever carsales does an ute comparison you know the winner will be a Ranger. They excluded the Hilux saying it’s not good enough before the comparison? A joke.

Literally had the dif locked with the ranger it couldn’t make it up the hill without it. Then the d max walked up without rough terrain mode on and everyone knows how bad the d max traction control is. You still call ford the winner lmao

Its amazing how these comparisons seem to obsess with all these new features/big screens/electronic handbrakes and a suite of electronic safety sensors. If you are going to take if off roading across the outback a lot of those things actually become detracting features and much more emphasis needs to be put on RELIABILITY and LONGEVITY. Im pretty sure that the Ranger is not really for the bush rather is an URBAN warrior a bit like a blokes version of a soccer mum car. Ford Ranger the most overhyped and overpriced 4WD ute on the market
