Casper, a d2c matress company, has barely any overhead and zero sales reps, AND they purchased from China. They couldn't stay profitable for years and their stock plummeted once they went public and everyone saw their financials. There's more that goes into selling bed than you think.

Originally, we stocked 3 brands. Sealy bought out the 2 others.

In that case, shopping in person is probably the best course of action, since you can see and touch the product before buying it, thus insuring you that it'll be comfortable and get your money's worth.

Honestly, if you live in easy driving range of an Ikea I recommend going there. Had my mattress for over a decade and as long as I rotate it/flip it every couple years I should get another solid decade out of it. Then I'll buy a cheap mattress topper to get another 5 years out of it then I'll look for a new one. And I was even able to return the first one I got from Ikea because it wasn't breaking in at home like it did in the store and they had no issue refunding us. (God bless my parents for driving with a bungee corded mattress on their car roof 3 times in 90 days across state lines.

Almost 100% accurate based on the very little I know as a consumer that simply did some research. Take the following with a grain of salt and confirm for yourself:

You can get better value by not buying from a mainstream store. Generally, if you want a high end mattress, you simply buy a few big thick slabs of latex of varying firmness layered a certain way and placed in a cover with some natural flame retardants like wool.

Better value mattresses mix coils with latex. As I mentioned before, go to a non mainstream store or online store (yes, they can ship them to you) but not Purple or Casper. If the internet is littered with reviews and ads for them, they probably don't offer good value for your money.

Products similar to Tempurpedic can be had for a fraction of the price. There is nothing high tech about them. That said, I hear memory foam has some advantages, but tend to be very warm and have some unnatural off-gassing.

I personally recommend the latex slabs, but they are not for everyone as they are a different type of springy in a way you may not be used to. Most people seem to get used to it. Also, when you see "latex mattress" make sure it's 100% fully a huge slab of latex. Some mattresses just have tiny amounts of latex inside and call it a "latex mattress".

In my case, I bought a mattress with a cover that can be unzipped. I can just open it up and take out the slabs of latex if I want, so it's easy to confirm that my mattress is indeed just huge slabs of latex inside a cover.

There few a couple of things you can do: 1 buy the cheapest mattress you can find, with the knowledge that it's probably very similar to the other ones you can get from the same company with the same materials. 2 make your own mattress out of layers of materials of your own choice, stuffed into a zipable mattress protector. 3 Ween yourself off of a mattress all together. A lot of people now sleep on wood floors, on piles of blankets, on air mattresses, on waterbeds, on sand beds/sandboxes, on pool floats on water, on orbie/gel filled mattresses, or on blanket-topped straw bails.

Solution: Buy a moderately priced, comfortable-to-you mattress from a store like Sam's or Costco in the $500(+/-) range, and replace it as needed (probably every 2-3 years). It's unfortunate to have to spend that money so frequently, but it's the best option.

I WASTED $1500 on a 'Purple' mattress, and it was really nice, for about 3-4 months. Then it started to collapse. It became incredibly uncomfortable before a year was up, and I contacted them to complain. They were offering a 10-year warranty at the time. The catch was, you had to prove the mattress had (I believe) a 1.5" drop in the middle. It had to be visible when you aren't on it, with no sheet on. It would take years of leaving weight on the same spot to make it collapse that severely. They knew they would never have to honor that warranty. They should be sued for it, but I'm sure they have all their legal bases covered.

Working in this industry the biggest scam is that manufacturers claim to be “green” but the use tons of solvent as a glue to build the mattress.. solvent is very toxic and I think it should be banned globally. One of my customers use so much solvent that I get a pounding headache when I go in their factory.. most of all I feel bad for the employees often foreigners.. I can’t prove this but I think a lot of them have brain damage.. please please don’t support manufacturers that use solvent!! Most don’t but their are still lots that do

And then there's FIBERGLASS. It's the cheapest way to comply with fire resistance laws. But WHEN (not if) the mattress ages enough for the fiberglass to poke its way out and escape, it is extremely itchy and irritates the lungs & eyes. In large enough quantities, fiberglass is almost impossible to remove from clothes and fabrics. It can require wardrobes to be thrown out, walls repainted, carpet replaced, and more. If the fiberglass leak is bad enough, it will contaminate your home's air vents and make the air painful to breathe (the only solution is to have all the air ducts in your home replaced).
Companies (even large name brands) save a dime by using fiberglass, but eventually it will cost the consumer 10s of thousands of dollars in home repair unless the consumer notices it in time. It's basically as if most beds came with hibernating bedbugs just waiting for their chance to strike.
And it's 100% legal because fiberglass is technically non-toxic. Companies even often mislead (using the word "silica" instead of "glass fiber" because silica is the only ingredient in fiberglass; claim they use "wool" when it's actually "glass wool" aka fiberglass, etc) or outright lie (when asked directly) about if their products contain fiberglass. They'll even be tricky with where they place the fiberglass within the mattress so that they can use loopholes to exclude fiberglass from the legal tag.
The corporate greed makes me feel sick
