Is it a good idea to stay at a ryokan with a very active 3 years old? I would love to stay at one but I am concerned that my daughter may break a lot rules.

When we would go skiing at Nozawa-onsen, we would stay at a minshuku. More casual and more fun. As American gaijin, we would have other guests stop by and practice their English and we would practice our Japanese. After a few Sapporos, practice became much better.

I know we don't tip at restaurants in Japan, but is it ok to tip the person who attended to us at the ryokan? If so, how much is appropriate? Would such a tip be offensive?

I found that to be absolutely fascinated - I have been too scared about staying at these although loving the idea but now, I really want to experience it. My only concern as a XXXL guy - will the clothes provided fit?

out of curiousity, let's say it's meal time and i try a food and i dislike it for whatever reason, would it be considered rude to not finish that part of the meal? do i just power through and eat it anyway?

It seems these locations are mean't for you to move really slow and do everything very slow. Everything seems to delicate as if you could blow everything just by breathing too hard

I just visited Japan for the 2nd time early this month. I wanted to experience traditional Japanese ryokan but I'm too shy to use a shared hot spring/ bath😆 Do most of the ryokan only have shared bath/hot spring? I hope to visit by winter and hopefully I'll have courage to stay in one!

I visited Japan back in 2007. It's a real shame I didn't know about this when I went. Then again, my travels there were very haphazard and we (my brother, friend, and I) did the best we could .

They look really lovely, and the food looks beyond amazing, but I think I'm way too anxious and fidgety to be able to really enjoy ryokans; I can barely sit still for 30 seconds, and even as a kid I could never sit on my knees with my legs folded under me, so any place with low tables would be right out. And no way I'm going to get into a hot tub completely naked with other people, even people I know (I don't even like to go barefoot). In other words, I'm basically the exact opposite of Zen, lol. Plus, if I get a hotel room, I want a place to sprawl out without having to worry about unfamiliar codes of etiquette, which would make my stay one big anxiety attack, always being worried about doing something wrong. For me, a private room, just like one's residence, should be one's own private universe, subject to nobody's rules but one's own.
