Explore Fiesole: A Perfect Day Trip from Florence, Italy

In this episode I will explore with you Fiesole, Italy. Visiting Fiesole is easy and it's a perfect half-day trip taking you from the historical centre of Florence. A well kept secret, Fiesole is only a 25-minute bus ride from the Santa Maria Novella train station. Located high above Florence, Fiesole captivates with its Etruscan-Roman past, with elegant villas and fascinating palaces, with monuments and nature trails.

Fiesole became an Etruscan stronghold in the 8th century BC, the Romans were finally able to dominate, building a thriving town of their own over the Etruscan remains. In the 14th century Fiesole became known as the new living quarters for the rich and famous Florentines looking for new territory to build their villas surrounded by cypress trees and spectacular gardens.

Take the #7 bus (Euro 1.70 for a one-way trip) and after arriving at Fiesole, walk from the Piazza Mino up to the panoramic terrace .Here you can enjoy a 180 degree view of Florence as it fades into the green hillsides of the Arno Valley. What is this view like when we compare it to the Piazzale Michelangelo?

Hike up just a little further and check out the 14th-century Franciscan San Francesca Monastery. The church still holds mass daily and hosts a free ethnological museum displaying international relics.

Back to the Piazza Mino, you can visit the Cathedral of Fiesole and walk through narrow cobblestone streets, visit the ancient Roman amphitheater, have a coffee or a glass of wine at one of the many outdoor cafes.

Make it a point to visit Fiesole's Etruscan-Roman Archaeological park. Inside the Archaeological area you'll find the remains of Roman baths and the Roman theatre, while in the Civic Museum you'll see many artefacts from both the Roman as well as Etruscan period. Entrance price is Euro 10.

Finally, as a bonus, walk from Fiesole down to the Convent of San Domenico through high-walled laneways and explore a rare side of Florence - a region untouched by the influence of tourism. It’s a peaceful, authentic and beautiful 20 minute walk down to this next village.

When you reach the San Domenico Convent, you can easily hop on the #7 bus and head back into Florence.
