I understand not to coast when going down a hill but can I coast when reversing down a hill?
ОтветитьCoasting is more scary in a truck than driving in a car.
ОтветитьI only do slowing down coasting then slowing down at the last second when I am about to turn at sharp junctions, not sure about others but It gives a faster slow down of the vehicle if the road is not long enough to do downshifting, but then I might just be a speed addict, but I'll try to practice this
ОтветитьHi Dane, i failed my first test for coasting. I find i do it most when I’m going along the straight and i have to drop to second to turn a corner. My car jolts forward when I drop gears so I think i may coast in order to avoid this, any tips to try avoid this ?😬
ОтветитьHi Dayne, I have a slight coasting problem when coming to a stop. Do you have any videos or tips on this? I break first but feel the car chugging so press down the clutch too and coast up to the stop. Am I breaking to much too soon?
ОтветитьHey Dane, you described about uphill and downhill coasting. What are your views on coasting when the vehicle is in good speed say on a highway. Would it be recommended and useful in fuel efficiency or bad ?
ОтветитьSuch a hard habit to kick but I did because engine breaking doesn’t feel so reliable.
ОтветитьFailed my test today, 6 marks for coasting 🙈 wish I'd watched this video beforehand.
ОтветитьI had been sent a news article about it which said anyone caught coasting in the UK could be fined
ОтветитьI just failed the test because of this !!
ОтветитьThanks for these videos, they've been so helpful !! But I just have a question about safe coasting in traffic, my car can't handle low speeds without stalling so in very slow moving traffic I have to have the clutch somewhat down for most of it until I can pick up a little more speed. Is that acceptable on a test? I can't see another way to drive in slow traffic otherwise.
ОтветитьHi Dane, I really enjoyed it and have seen my mistakes. Well explained and I have a test coming up. Hope to make it. Thanks again
ОтветитьPlease note that all of these also count as coasting: pressing the clutch pedal before the brake, travelling in NEUTRAL gear, not releasing the clutch after you change gear, using the clutch as a 2nd brake, staying on the clutch when turning left or right or anytime where you press the clutch without changing gears or stopping.
ОтветитьI got 5 grade 2s for this in my test. Thanks for giving me a better understanding
ОтветитьYou do save gas if you coast a lot. We are taught to coast to stop signs and red lights in driving school and are expected to do it during the exam. It can be dangerous downhill and at higher speeds
ОтветитьHi Dani, in the first example,do we must use the handbrake at any stop sign downhill Or it depends if we are stoping for over 5 secs at the the stop sign? Thanks
ОтветитьSo coasting isnt bad mechanically and only a danger to inexperienced drivers. That's all I needed to know.
ОтветитьWhen I’m coming to a stop on a flat surface how long before the stop should I put the clutch in ?
Love the videos.
I don't think I've ever seen a video in the sunshine! :))
ОтветитьI get what you're trying to say in this video. But how you're explaining it is not making you sound good.. To say engine breaking is a way of slowing down naturally is a bit of a false statement. Very slowing down naturally happens whether you're coasting or engine breaking.. Even while engine breaking if you're on a steep enough hill you would need breaking to keep yourself from speeding up. I apologize but I did not bother to watch past your 1st example. Because even in that you specified that you were using light breaking it's like breaking while driving in gear down the hill to maintain your speed and then the example of coasting you didn't have your foot on the brake at all. You changed the elements of your test as far as your application of the brake between the 2 examples to make your point instead of letting things happen equally to show that even if you're coasting if you're applying breaking you can maintain your speed
Ответитьi have a question. Is using the clutch to go slower speeds in 2nd gear considered coasting? as in the clutch is not fully depressed but is used to control speed? I am asking this because when im turning in somewhere i find 2nd gear to be too quick, but if i use breaks the car feels like the engine is struggling and if i gear down to 1st im going too fast for it. if it is then is there any advice you can give me to help with this?
ОтветитьHi Dane, are you allowed to feather the clutch when making a turn ? My car is diesel and sometimes 2nd gear can be a bit too fast. Is it acceptable to just feather it to biting point to stop it from pulling. Similar to feathering the clutch when doing a turnabout, not fully depressing the clutch
Ответитьsolution = JUST BUY AN AUTOMATIC CAR
ОтветитьHi Dane, is it considered coasting if At a red traffic light i slow down and go back into 2nd gear, I push my clutch in but then the light turns green before I stop so I just release my foot off the clutch instead of stopping and moving off in 1st gear.
ОтветитьYou are a regurgitator!..You are reading off a little note you copied and in the UK this is illegal because your moronic bureaucrats. "The vehicle will pick up speed"..LMAO so fucking what???If this terrifies you you should not be driving a bloody car!...This moronic law in the UK has got to be the dumbest thing I have heard. Tell me how on bloody earth can a stupid cop enforce this?..How the hell would he know I am putting my car in Neutral or pushing and holding down the clutch?? Heres another one...I own a BMW i3 and it has ONE PEDAL driving, so when going downhill or straight I can get the power to go in the middle indicating I am not using any power and COASTING which in some cases ABSOLOUTLEY will save energy. The thing is, is I can actually drive and am in control of my car at all times, and if this were to cause me to "lose control of my vehicle", I would be UNFIT, I repeat, UNFIT to drive!, in fact how the hell would this cause me to lose control?..if I was going down a 35 degree hill??.you DO have brakes yes???.news flash: even with the engine in drive the car will SPEED UP going down a hill that steep..does that constitute a danger as well???. IDIOTS!!
ОтветитьThe proper way to coast downhill is to leave it in the proper gear, many modern cars have deceleration fuel cutoff and you’ll save gas if you let the wheels turn the engine
ОтветитьYou should make a video of a coasting car where engine stalls, then it becomes very apparent why coasting is dangerous.
ОтветитьI think this video was not very useful. I’m trying to find out if the car will be damaged or effected in any way from coasting down a hill in neutral. I’ve been told it doesn’t allow oil to the engine while you’re moving and so it can be bad but I haven’t been able to find any information on that. The main reason I believe this isn’t useful is because any person who drives and uses neutral is aware that being in gear slows the car down and being in neutral will allow it to move faster, I also understand that the engine will not be in gear and can make my own safe decisions based on that. I need to know the effects of coasting in neutral on my car, I am quite capable of driving the car safely down the road in neutral or not, and it is your opinion that you should not be moving faster for whatever reason, you didn’t explain if engine breaking was necessary for the car or anything, you just said it makes you drive faster and that can be unsafe
ОтветитьDefinitely coasting downhill tomorrow
ОтветитьAfter getting the license, after some experience, after some cars, after getting a lousy second hand car for downhill, change perspectives.
Engine braking is good for ...
Coasting is good for ...
"Blip" the clutch in second is good for ...
Toyota coaster mini coach have the word coast.
Engine inertia (and some other parts with flywheel effect) during coasting is not contributing to brake "stress" under conditions of being able to stop without a screech, without ABS, without EBD, at lower engine RPM.sss. Understanding those conditions, one can even stop quicker.
When smoothness is the game. Torque level at second gear is clutch-saving when blipping. Light first gear blipping to get parked is japanese sabotage sounding like race-spec, v-spec, nur-spec
Small Diesel lorry-truck can move off in gear 3 when unladen...
What about for older cars with two-stroke engines, isn't coasting in neutral preferred for those so they can get a consistent flow of oil?
ОтветитьWow, I didn't expect a video that good.
ОтветитьThis is extremely helpful, I have a terrible habit of pressing the clutch as a sense of control when in fact it does the opposite, thank you.
ОтветитьMy input from this I guess would be if you pressed the brake while on gear why wouldn’t you press the brake again while on neutral? You brakes still work just as good even if you are on neutral right?
ОтветитьMy kind of driving is downshifting from high speeds to lover gears and braking. Coming to traffic lights just clutch and braking. Its more simple to stop that way. As for dowhill 3d gear around 3 with light brakes. I always clutch in in corners and in 2nd if I need to react. That mostly how everyone drives i guess.
ОтветитьCan coasting damage clutch plate
ОтветитьI love coasting. Have been for the last 20 years, and save so much fuel. Never do I ever put so much speed that I need to brake and when I brake I use my foot not my engine. My brakes last forever ever as I never gain so much speed and predict most situations and keep tracking everything around. I drive alone and never touch my phone nor do I have a stereo because my car is that basic. 2.5 lac km on Indian roads and still my cheap ass clutch is strong.
Europeans drive safe and have great ethics but can’t handle much, especially the awareness the Indian conditions train you for, is completely missing. Also Europeans can do with bad economy which many poor Indians can’t deal with.
Which saves more fuel? Im doing that don't know about control
ОтветитьIf you dont know how to use neutral you should not be driving a car
ОтветитьYou know once u let ur klutch go ur not coasting and u have engine breaking nothing dangerous about it u just go like a little bit different around ur speed its unusual not dangerous
ОтветитьTitle says "What is coasting and why is it bad", but you end the video with two examples where coasting isn't so bad, in fact even recommended! I feel this is quite typical for "experienced drivers" trying to be smart in front of beginners - saying "coasting is bad you should never do it!" without realising there are situations where it's perfectly fine (making you look like you're not that experienced as you claim to be...). What about coasting down a small hill, without the need to stop at the bottom (because there's no intersection, it's just another hill upwards this time)? Is that also so horrifyingly bad?
ОтветитьThank you for explaining so clearly! There are so many manual driving videos that use terms I think only racers and gearheads know and they leave me lost even though I’ve been driving my manual car for 30 years. My dad only taught me how to make the car go. 😅
Ответитьhow many times can you coast in your driving test. i tend to do this some times when i am going down some of the gears. I'm finding the habit very hard to break. I'm also cutting out the car now trying to break the habit. what can i do.
ОтветитьI have a habit of putting my feet on the clutch and brake when taking a left corner. I think I should be off the clutch and on the brake only. Is that correct?
ОтветитьFailed my test yesterday with 6 faults due to coasting, and hadn’t the slightest notion as to why it’s such an issue. My instructor has some explaining to do 😅
ОтветитьThank you! Very helpful and great explanation
ОтветитьI passed first time thank you so much
ОтветитьIf coasting doesn not damages the car then oh well
ОтветитьWell explained👏👏👏
Ответитьcoasting is also bad because it starves the engine of oil by not spinning the oil pump
Ответить
