By the way, is there a chart to show what model car use what device? O a quick identification method?
Thanks

An forced induction engine doesn’t ‘need’ both a MAF and MAP sensor. This is simply for emission controls on OEM applications. The only critical sensors to make a fuel injected engine run are: Crank, Cam (only if SIDI), MAP, IAT and coolant temp.

I thought you wouldn't mention diesel engines at all, but you did... 🙂
So if I understood correctly, it’s less common in diesel engines, but nowadays they do have them, MAP and MAF? For example, my 2.2 i-CTDI Civic probably has one? If that’s the case, since the car is from 2008, I may benefit from cleaning MAF and MAP sensors or just replacing them and getting my fuel consumption lowered. It’s mostly driven in city traffic so the fuel consumption is around 8L/100km, that’s slightly aggressive driving.
Of course, amazing video as always.

Cheers

I still don't understand why my car's engine has only a MAP inside the airbox, before the throttle bodies (ITBs). What is it doing in this setup?

Karman Vortex Airflow Meters are still used in new non-turbo petrol Peugeots. With regards to older engines, I've most commonly seen them in Peugeot's 1.6HDi and 1.5 diesel motors.

Thanks for the great video! I have a question though: I saw some MAF sensors output a frequency rather than a voltage or a current. How do they work? I thought only Karman Vortex sensors output a frequency. I'm just getting into tuning, and please pardon my ignorance.

Thank you for this very useful info. But I still don't get how a MAP can work without a temp sensor? The number of molecules will change in an intake, if the pressure is constant but the temp change? So the temp must be known to calculate the fuel needed?

Great explanation. Cars ran speed density for a few years around 1990 relying on a simpler MAP sensor. I converted my own car to run a Custom Operating System speed density tune (with twin spark tables) and used it as a daily driver. It never missed a beat during the 10 years I owned it. (MAF sensor removed and P0102 turned off). It gave better throttle response and gained 15 rwhp on a back to back dyno test.

A little clarification on MAF sensors. They have two thermal sensors, one on the heater, another aside. Electronic control aims at maintaning a constant temperature difference between the heated and unheated temp sensor. Flow rate is evaluated based on the selected temp difference and consumed power by the heater. The use of two temp sensors eliminates the inaccuracy related to air temperature variation. In steady flow this sensor works quite well, but under rapidly changing flow rate may have dynamic errors.

It surprises me that almost all the new aftermarket ecu's us Map instead of Mas because the Map doesn't react as well to engine upgrades. I guess that's why they let you input your changes into the ecu via a laptop.

Thanks for expanding on the working of the Vane Air Flow Meter. My '93 Protege has exactly this. I just changed the air filter and the car bucks when I give it gas. Looks like either the vane is dirty - sticking closed - or the meter isn't installed perfectly horizontal. QUESTION: If the vane is sticking, will MAF Sensor cleaner fix it?

Great again man! Got a question about throttle body that no one ever answered but I believe you can.
I’m driving my car 80-90-100 mpg and I get off accelerator. The throttle body is now closed. Where does the engine takes the air to still run at 3-4 k RPM.
Same with the second gear why does it sometimes push me forward with my foot off the pedal.
Is the throttle body somehow adaptive and its not listening to your foot but to your RPM or what :))
I wouldn’t mind to see a video about this topic.
