Are you kidding me? Most of "AAA+" companies include multiplayer in their games. In last 10 years they were released countless battle royale online games, half of indie games have at least cooperation and you don`t really need super computer to play those, countles mobile games that depend entirely on internet connection and when game is lacking multiplayer and developer refuse to add one modders often do that themselfs.
Back in 2000 aside from Tibia and first call of duty/battlefield vietman there wasn`t much of multiplayer games + lots of people didn`t even had internet let alone computer to handle those.
You can`t claim that online gaming is lonely place if you don`t talk with other people in the first place.
And even funnier is expecting socializing from people who just wanna play a game - go play vr chat, or go to omegle or even better soultion - go outside if you need socilizing.
Crying about "lone multiplayer experience" is like crying over fallen rotten apple under blooming apple tree.

I loved Halo 3 online with the people, but now if you turn on the mic all you get are annoying children or really really dumb adults.

I think it is also partly due to some games being so strict with their in-game voice chat and text, as such anything you say could potentially get you in trouble. So it just feel more comfortable just talking to the people you know, rather to a stranger who might not like what you said and could report you for being offensive.

Modern gaming is only being able to do things like actually playing the game and experience it's content by playing it alone and not getting hunted/ trolled by depressed creepy virgins like in gta 5. Halo will never be what it once was because the gaming industry is all gambling and pulling as much money out of people as possible by making the games content and all dlc's around forcing players to buy in game things. Modern gaming is dead and boring and there are no good games out there anymore. Gta 6 is going to be dog shit and I'll be skipping it and there are no other games that are fun or worth playing.

On PC try Mechwarrior online, Planetside 2, Project Zomboid, CS GO, Hell let Loose, lot of VR games have very active chat, too much to my liking.. um.. these are the ones I play anyway.. and the people are very active in these games. I guess it's all about your personal selection of games :)

Graphics accounted for, how have multiplayer games improved in "many, many, ways"? Genuine question. I'd argue multiplayer game experiences have broadly been in massive decline in pretty much every major aspect circa 2010-2015.

I'd actually appreciate someone to present an argument against that position.

We were kids and teenagers and we had someone to share our gaming experiences at school. Now we are grown ups and we either have no friends around or it would be awkward to talk about gaming with co-workers at work.

I'm 42 years old, and I started playing online with MOHAA on PC. I played the shit out of that game for 6 years straight, and even though profanities were shared, I know how many who still know how great of an experience they had back then with that game. It's the most hilarious and engaging gameplay I've experienced and I just haven't found anything like it since. No wonder this game still has active players, and that's not something you can say about much other 21 year old videogames, that has active players online. The other thing is that it's an FPS game, and most fps games live for a short period of time, and then you hop over to the next.

I decided some years ago to just stop voice when I played, and then I stopped chat as well. I've just seen the zoomer way of doing things which is a one way street, and it just doesn't work.
So, now I primarily play games where I have to be able to just play on understanding alone(as in no voice and no chat) and I just know that my age isn't really helping obviously. I'm only playing on PS5 btw and using the mic and speaker on that controller for communication is just utter trash. It's way too low volume, and lacks any kind of fidelity simply because it's within a gamepad. As voice is not of importance to me any more, I just decided to shut it down completely for every game.
I'm someone who used to play Arma, and it went from working ok, to not at all when the zoomers entered. Most people had an understanding of allowing others some breathing room to roam around, and the zoomer mind is simply one way street and they shoot absolutely anything on sight. Then start building megatowers just to place a tank on top of it.

Anyhow, the main thing I see within gaming in general these days is a complete lack of understanding, and most simply don't give a shit and then wonder why others are pissed off. Any game need a certain understanding of how things should be done, and zoomers want zero structure, so anyone can just backstab you, and they want it yesterday.

Gaming as a culture has been raped, because it's not about the game anymore. It's a personal agenda being pushed. Just utter garbage.

Games in the past focused on fun, loose rules and not taking things seriously. Games today focus on competitiveness to the nth degree, serious rules and taking everything seriously.

As a 33YO. Who experienced everything form the gameboy(no color) to ps5 i feel this. I feel like i went through the golden era of games all the way to now....the decline of games...(for the most part)

There are some MMORPGs I would prefer to play with competent AI instead of people for the followings reasons:
1. I can play on my own time (5 minutes or 18 hours).
2. The AI would hopefully be using the META and perfectly avoid the mechanics so I'm not wasting a lot of tie because people are bad.
3. Bonus if the AI is intuitive to be nicer than the lowest common denominator of players and even offer tips to improve how I play.

I’m 33 now, so I grew up in that era…I play alone now. Single player games. Idk how it is these days but I’m not about to find out.

Not only I feel like people don't even really make strides to socialize or speak even if they are talking, say for example vr chat which I'd designed to be social and I've lost count how many times I try to initiate communication with someone and they just flat out ignore me, they glance at me but won't reply.

Destiny 1 was the true multi-player gaming experience. Online only, exploring different planets with different guardians with different powers, fighting enemies together. Nothing can match it again

I guess that efficiency is a cold mistress and her price for convenience is to take the warmth of the human factor (with its pros and cons) out of the equation. Maybe it was too high of a price to pay for mere quality of life improvements.
