In this discourse Om Swami talks about the meaning of the word guru and says that there is a huge difference between a teacher and a guru. He says that a teacher can only teach but a guru’s responsibility is different. A guru teaches one to be still in unstable conditions. The word guru has come from the Sanskrit word Garishth which means the one who dispels darkness. Om Swami says that the guru in the form of teacher who gives his disciple deeksha is only one form of guru for Lord Dattatreya had many gurus and he learnt from the elements too.
Another meaning for the word guru is pregnant. To hold something in one’s womb means guru. A guru does not teach or preach but starts to condition the disciple. He gives a seed and makes one
pregnant with an idea or an option. The disciple then understands that they have received the seed which they have to hold in their womb and have to just walk the path. He says that there is a code of conduct between a guru and the disciple which is never to be broken. If it breaks then the guru does not remain a guru and a disciple does not remain a disciple. This is the reason why elders and gurus are worshipped. There is always a decorum maintained in worship says Om Swami.
