Moana 2 Review | Did the Sequel Sink?

I haven't seen this movie yet, but it looks like my concerns with it's production history seems to be true. I'm fine with a sequel to Moana, but I'd prefer if it wasn't originally going to be that Disney+ series. I do get that Disney would want to make up for all the box-office bombs they had in the past few years, but still. Also, two .5 review scores in a row?! That's a bit crazy.

Did this really need a sequel ? 😠

6.5/10 he rarely gives a Disney film from recent times a score lower then a 7,8 or the usual seal of approval the last time being chicken little but considering he gave it the same rating as Leo from a year ago is funny but then again I know there is the planes movies,strange magic and the Disney+ movies like the animated dairy of a wimpy kid films the ice age adventures of buck wild and night at the museum but those aren’t really in the official Disney library so this is the first film since chicken little where he gave a film by Walt Disney Animation something other then a 7, a 8,a 9 or a 10 unless when he reviews meet the robinsons he gives it either a 5/10 or a 6/10

The story was far from bad. It had several strenghs over the original??
My problem is that people went in with expectations that the film could not deliver on. People are upset matangi was not the villan like she was shown of in the trailer. So?? Why did you go in with that expectation locked in. A movie has to do everything you suspect. Second, the main villan wasnt even in the film. Uhhh... I dont know how to tell you this, but hes a god. Have you read greek or polonesian myths. Who told you a villan absolutely has to be a human form. He is a god who took the form of a storm, why is this inacurate or bad again.

Maybee next time dont enter a film with the perfectionist mindset and expect a decent but allright sequel. Smh.

I really liked the crazy Bat Lady who’s animated like Adam Sandler’s Count Dracula. But alas, her screen time was so small I can’t remember her name or the song she sang.

Main thoughts: why sequels, also before watching my movie, I set my expectations as low as possible, and I think I did the right call cuz it was kind of all right

I like they gave her some muscle. While i didn't see the show yet i heard great things about tangleds tv show i feel this would've done the same but hey atleast Disney made its money back already on the film

Just like Kung Fu Panda 4, Moana 2 could have been a lot worse

Moana's shipmates remind me of those three guys from Lightyear.

I already said my piece about this film under other reviews, so here's a different type of comment: I hope the Moana remake gets the Batgirl treatment. It should be scrapped after early filming as a tax write-off.

I asked my cousin what she thought about this after hearing from my aunt, and she said this movie sank. I wanted to compare her opinion to Mat’s, so I assume she’d give this less than he did.

This was terrible

It was never going to be a series like you think. Compare to the actual Disney plus shows, a few shorts that max 30 minutes together. Hence why they said the idea became bigger.
Also this is still the best looking movie of the year.

i dont know if the animation should have gotten a 10/10 ...as weird as it sounds, i liked more the spellbound than moana 2

I agree that this film isn't as good as the original Moana, but I still had a lot of fun watching it in theaters. I didn't like most of the new characters since they didn't stand out much, and some, like Matangi, didn't reach their full potential when they easily could've, but the movie still had some awesome action scenes, some emotional content that had me shocked, and it was great to see Moana and Maui again, especially the latter because he was a blast to watch and had a lot of funny moments.

To be honest, I enjoyed the film. It is miles above Elemental, Wish or Lightyear. And I admit it is better than Strange World

Do not support this movie. It sets a shitty practice for animation in making movies that studios should not follow.

AniMat it felt more like Disney was repeating their mistake of making an animated TV Series out of animated movie and making it into a sequel and not learning from Belle's Magical World and Alantis: Milo's Return. They really should've stuck with having Moana 2 be a Disney Plus Animated Series than a cinematic sequel.

First time that animat have given a recent Disney movie a 6/10 which it should’ve gone to either strange world (which I though was pretty good) or wish (since that got panned so hard). But not even your Disney fanboy can love this. But no just no! To that live action Maui!! Why? Why??

I know it doesn't t seem like it but can we just wish the live action Moana movie is an april fools day prank.

Just saw it in 4DX, and guys…

You don’t know what you’re in for! The 3D looked amazing, and all the effects made the movie so phenomenonal!

There was air blasting from the right side of the chair, wind blowing around, smoke and fog filling the room at times, water spraying at the back of the seats behind us, rain from the ceiling, and the seats moving along with all that happened in sync with the movie.

As a movie, Moana 2 was at least fine (although it still doesn’t hold a candle to the first). But with the 4DX AND the 3D? It was a freaking THRILL RIDE!

And yes, you could even feel a nudge on your back multiple times if like a dart got shot or someone thudded to the ground or even if somebody got punched!

It was all so AMAZING!! And I have been to 6 movies in 4DX back in 2019, so coming back in, I knew what to expect. And yet I STILL had a fun time!

Your rating is exactly how I feel about this sequel. One thing I will say about the songs, though, is that at least they have some rhymes to the lyrics when compared to the songs from Wish which were just made by an AI.

Can you also do Disney classics that you haven't done like The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, The Aristocats, Oliver and Company, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, Dinosaur, Brother Bear, Home on the Range, Meet The Robinsons, and Bolt?

This fun Polynesian Sequel belongs with extras including Mulan 2 Return To Neverland Frozen 2 & others but the only sequel that is actually a classic is Kronk's New Groove!and Yeah Moana 2026 will be Something quit quite Interesting and of course A whole lot Screwed for Disney! Marking 10 years of the Original 2016 classic!

Not only Moana 2 was better than Belle’s Magical World and Atlantis:Milo’s Return. Also,Moana 2 was a bit more better and somewhat of a bit of a improvement over Wish and Strange World since these previous two films weren’t big hits and absolute failures for Disney and even the sequel would be better than the live-action remake coming out in two years(2026).

Let’s hope Zootopia 2 would put Walt Disney Animation Studios back on track next year after this,Wish,and Strange World.

But Hey, Moana 2 and Wish are better than the Pointless Skydance Animation Disaster: Spellbound

Well everyone, now that Moana 2 managed to sail decently, it's now time to see will the Lord of the Rings anime movie be a Christmas miracle and end the year with a bang or a wimper.

Are you kidding me right now, there's no way in Disney history that Moana 2 is a worse as Wish and Strange World, including Ralph Breaks the Internet, combined. I also understand it hasn't been easy for Disney to come up with something that works, especially now that some of the modern day movies didn't work out well or wasn't meant to exist, just like the live action remakes, although nothing good ever comes from live action movies, especially of some beloved tv shows in which Hollywood ruins them by pandering to the audience (make things worse), or in this case, Moana 2 being as disappointing as Raya and the Last Dragon, which I never understood why since it doesn't look that bad.🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

If Disney remain their plans for this sequel to stay as the TV series I think other animated feature would take its place who knows maybe zootopia 2 could be released this year or even Penelope or Bluebeard but at the end of the day it was all Disney's desperation for a success at the box office after two disappointments with strange World and wish if wish was successful especially if they remain with their plants of star being a human and queen amaya being evil I think Disney would be more focused on Bluebeard and Penelope and leaving zootopia 2 and Frozen 3 to a later time


So I'm not going to see this sequel after the disappointments of wish and instead I'll skip it and wait for to watch The return of the bunny next year


And then again if the live-action remake doesn't succeed as it will be the fate of Snow White and possibly Mufasa and Lilo & Stitch it will be the end of the remakes

In conclusion I would rather enjoy mediocre original ideas like strange World and wish and letting the magic of Disney animation die and disappear before we face another batch of sequels

Still better than Spellbound, which was the worst animated movie of 2024.

Let me explain it like this: Moana 2 is like a coloring book for children.
Children love the pretty figures and they like coloring them.
The story is simply bad written garbage.
Alas, the children don't care about reading the story anyway.

Imagine it sold 2 billion copies world wide then.
Critics write review after review singing praises about how amazing the writing of the coloring book is.

They even go as far as calling it a masterpiece of literally proportions above Shakespeare or The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Why? Because it sold 2 billion copies of course!
It MUST BE because of it's masterful writing right?
Nope. It's just the pretty figures.

Now, Moana 2 as a movie is the same. Nice animation, garbage writing/story.
But the critics bark at anyone who points that fact out.

If we count the Pixar films, I think the last time Mat gave a recent Disney animated film a mixed score was with Cars 3. It’s been 7 years since he’s done that

I thought you were referring to Moana 3 in the ending and I was about to say I expect that to be better because it'll be paced like a movie again...and then I was reminded that live-action Moana is a thing.
