I have the 5 Elvis Sun label 45's that were reissued in 73 ? Made from the same master. except of course no push marks ; so they would come in vogue if originals can't be found. How close to quality of sound are the reissues from the originals ? I also have these 5 reissues in colored vinyl made in 90's.

Audio engineer here: Most mastering processes use a type of compression. Mastering is usually thought of as a type of compression known as limiting. I'm not a mastering engineer but I just want to state that searching if a new master uses compression is useless most if not all masters use compression in some form.

Remastering is great for photos, documentary audios and videos but when it comes to songs, I don't think it's a good idea.

Much left out and misinformation here. When looking for pressings mastering is very important. And just because something is reissued that does not mean it will be from the original mastertape. Could be a digital transfer, copytape etc. Record weight 180 or 200 gram has very little to do with improving sound quality. In fact heavier vinyl can cause MORE issues with vinyl such as non-fill and vta issues. As far as Mofi or an audiophile pressing being the best sound, that is a case by case basis. And many many times, if not most, original pressings or even early reissues win out for sound. Unless one prefers that goosed up unatural audiophile sound that many times comes with these companies mastering. In the end it is mastering and who the mastering engineer is and the quality of work that goes into the mastering that makes the difference. One can have the exact perfect mastertape and do a crappy mastering job or have a copytape and do a great job that sounds best.

Its good to bring attention to this topic for listeners but sorry there is alot of off kilter info in this video.

Thank you for this video! Very well explained. I would always prefer a repressing to a remastering. I like to hear how it sounded "then." The remastering can make songs sound better, but I like to think that the original sound is a record of the song's history. A part of that time. To me, it would be like taking an old chair that was assembled using wooden dowel pegs to hold it together, but then removing those and using screws instead because they hold the chair together better. That is true, but it is not the same chair as was built way back when. Just my take on it but again thanks for the video and I know you have helped many understand the differences of these pressings and remakes.

[sigh] The most overused phrase in modern history is "O.G." Well, unless it's used in reference to a pressing, re-pressing or remastered edition of Ice T.'s debut album; if that's the reference, it's not overused at all.

Also, check your use of language, sir. One can utilize "a multitude of things" or can use "myriad things," but "a myriad of things" is grammatically incorrect.

So what about reissue as opposed to repress?

In some cases folk see a repress as a continuation of the original pressing as in when orders outnumber stock and so new plates/stampers are made from the original master tapes.

They may not be from the initial quota ordered but are part of the extended order when more copies are ordered during its original release.

A reissue is a later re-release that is separate from the original release like say five years, ten years or twenty years later but the tape has not been remastered.

To some though anything pressed from a second stamper onwards is not original even if the records from a second stamper were part if the initial order.

With some artists you don't know how many you can sell so order small amounts pressed with a possible extension to the order if the album is a success whereas with some artists you know in advance that the album will sell 100's of 1000's or even millions and so order that many in advance which would requite literally hundreds of different stampers as a stamper is effectively worn out after about 5000 pressings.

Another thing is, the audio quality of the records pressed will diminish over the lifetime of each stamper with the first of the batch to be pressed being the best audio quality and the last if the batch being somewhat diminished.

Now most collectors will always go for the low numbered albums when buying albums that are numbered thinking they have the first of the batch to be pressed whilst trying to avoid numbers in the thousands.

The thing is, when records are pressed the get stacked, the low numbers end up on the bottom of the stack and so are the last of the stack to be placed in their covers, and if those covers are numbered then the numbers on those covers will be in the 1000's with the records that were pressed last being in the low numbered covers.

Remasters usually don't sound all that great. But the 2012 Michael Jackson's "Bad" remaster sounded excellent on my turntable. And the recent Chicago remasters sound better than the originals due to their very good engineers. But most of the time I prefer reissues from Amazon cut from a good digital master, or a Very Good + condition original from discogs.

My girlfriend and I for reasons we couldn't pinpoint, realized that listening to some 70s Jean Michel Jarre on vinyl sounded more "real" and "resonant" than a digital file would. I tend to stream music but I have noticed some incredible dynamics from vinyl, almost like each instrument can be heard with greater clarity, less compressed, less blocky. Maybe not as loud, but somehow a very tactile experience. If I'm gonna get a record, I'm gonna grab a classic pressing over any "special edition remaster" because I want the authentic, original analogue sound.

My father recently passed at 78 years of age. I inherited his record collection (about 200 33’s and countless large boxes of 45’s and about two dozen 78’s). He bought them as an early teenager and throughout his 20’s and 30’s. I imagine I have alot of original pressings in there. Beetles. Beach Boys. Elvis. Herman’s Hermits. The Everly Borthers. Hell I think there’s even a Devo record or two in there.

It’s going to be painstaking too try to identify all that I have
