What is not mentioned is that in Venice... nobles were not permitted to trade by law! Common citizens alone could engage in business. Noble families lived off the patronage of business interests that supported them politically. In turn the business class needed skilled labour and customers to generate the profits necessary to afford "favourable legislation." Reasonable wages were thus paid to the working class. Labourers prospered. All this was unthinkable elsewhere at the time, today it is taken for granted. This kept the social structure of the Serene Republic in balance for over a thousand one hundred years. When the United States won its independence, Venice was the only powerful Republic in existence and was studied by the American founding fathers in detail...

Always wondered how Venice, with such a small land, survived so many large neighboring kingdoms and empires.
