Think there were 2 Queen cliques , based on music preferences. Brian and Roger who are rock based at heart, and Fred and John who were more eclectic and more "pop" accepting. Might be a Smile basis to this too, except Freddie was always transitional and adaptive. When Brian and Roger took on Adam, and themselves took part in US Talent Show, I was lost to them, even though basically rock based myself. John was Queen and saddened by those professing to be still.

John isnt only solid but his bass runs are amazing.
Hes quick and precious and holds it down.

In a way, John is responsible for Queens legend status. If not for John, Queens last album would have been hot space, a wholly terrible album. Freddy had run out of songs and John took over clearing all the great songs from Queens second coming.

Under-rated track from John: One Year of Love from the Kind of Magic album. I like to think he wrote that just to show case Freddie’s voice as it seems designed for little else. He and Freddie were closer than many realise and co-wrote songs on that same album, including Friends Will Be Friends.
