If you can disrupt this market bro, then you'll be capable of doing anything in life. Because I know and sit with people who drink same brand whisky all their life. Its that personal to them. I myself only and only drink Royal Challenge regularly I don't even feel like trying any other brand even if it's better or tastes better. Its like that harry potter movie, when harry goes to buy a magic wand and the wand chooses him and it becomes his wand for life. It is very or next impossible to disrupt this market and the Gods of this market are Seagrams, McD, Backpiper, RC and IB.
Don't even think of going near Old Monk.
The only chance you're gonna get to disrupt this market is when the leaders of this market make a mistake by changing the blend.

In my opinion he is not doing anything innovative. He is going to import bottled in origin scotch and market it. The liquor industry is so corrupt and riddled with red tapes. Even the technological advances( here also many companies are involved & lot of money goes under table to get orders) like scanning of labels, uploading of scanned items in excise portal are meticulously used by local excise officers/ Babus to harrass the bottler. For example excise commissioner of a large state in North India is due for retirement has introduced a portal to track the liquor bottles. Funny part is they have not discontinued the old portal but introduced new portal which has all sort of teething problems. Since most of states in India are dependent on liquor revenue year after year they increase the license fees, permit fees, Bond fees but take their own sweet time to revise cost card. Most of states follow excise rules & guidelines formulated by Britishers way back in 1930's but never revised or changed.

Keralaites drinks more brandy cause being a matriarchal society, the medicinal property of brandy is given as an excuse to the lady of the house for drinking …also the large Christian population adds to the consumption …if you added toddy to the mix then u have a different story …. Last but not the least the bitter sweet taste of brandy goes best with spicey fish fry or nathuly ( sardines) fry or beef chili as chakna or TOUCHINGS as they call it

India desperately needs brands that can take on the world, the IP of a world class brand is literally invaluable. Congrats to Woodsman team (not a big fan of the name). Hopefully it will be a long standing world class brand.

When he said that he did his schooling from GD Goenka, I knew his family is rich. And later went to Manchester to study Management.

I studied in a low income private school, DDPS Ghaziabad.
Now I know why I am not doing well in life. 😢
So frustrating to see such success stories. Rich becoming more richer & lower middle class folks' social mobility is zero. 😢

Such podcasts and Shorts prompted to buy Bombay Shaving products, not going back to foreign brands. Pet Foods, is a category which in India is dominated by Canadian, Austrian and Thai brands. Hopefully you bring this up.

Woodsmen guy has done the hard work as alcohol business has huge entry barriers due to tuff and time consuming Licensing Process....Having said that on Hind side since he is a Mckenzie Guy...he is looking at his product through the vantage point of objective critical thinking to quantify all the tangibles ( since he has interacted with everyone in the Value chain he has basically applied the japanese principle of Nemawashi) however he has to understand that whiskey is a highly Fragemented Market with massive entry barriers if he has created a descent product which every player has and there are legend brands in this space as wll....he should look at it by applying principles of Art of War "Fight the enemy where they aren't" since he is trying to create a balance between value an aspiration should start offering 800 ml bottles instead of 750 ml ones( this branding has to happen at liquor shop as that's where the decusion of buying is made, which is in between 750 ml and 1 litre and offer it at the same price point as 750 ml this would create Value and aspiration could be created with the tag line he used Smoothest whiskey and drive that narrative with intelligent marketing...However the MOAT would always be in Distribution rather than Product...Also look at creating product line depth instead of width meanung just focus in whiskey may be different flavours or different variations of Bourbon...introduce flavours that are more suitable to the indian Pallete...Also while doing this look at the P&L to see if it will be Sustainable over a period of time and be Frugal with spending...This is slightly paradoxical in nature however long term sucsess lies in solving these paradoxes !!!

Woodsmen guy got a reality check when his brand was not called out by both the participants as taste is extremely personal preference the insights he should take from it is get out of this consultant mindset of brekaing every aspect down and take a more emotional approach using nuances of human psychology another insight would be the MOAT is in Distribution!!!! Look at white spaces like if Kerala is Brandy then there lies the opportunity for whiskey to penetrate in a small niche also if north east is rum again whiskey could penetrate in that niche..however in these markets woodsmen whiskey would have to be no. 1.....Sam altman had talked about built a product in the smallest niche make it successfull there and then scale it in larger markets !!!

Shantanu is feeding the devil at 55 minutes...as a whiskey cinsumer at woodsmen price point i am not asking the wine shop owner to give me IMFL or Himalayan water whiskey because if you postulate with this logic and there is no distinctive difference like colour, taste or aroma then there is differentiator and by that time you would have spend a bomb in driving the Himalayan water whiskey messaging !!!
