Africa's Killer Cats: Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs | Wildlife Icons 101

South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the largest games reserves on the continent. It covers nearly 20,000 square kilometers of diverse habitats and contains hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles. This abundance of animals means many predators - including Africa’s big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. They exist side by side, though their specialized behavior and habitat tend to keep them apart.

Africa’s Big Cats is an up close and personal look into the lives of three families of Africa’s most effective and iconic feline predators living in the famous Kruger Park: A lioness struggling to raise her young cubs without the support of a pride; A wise old leopard whose daughter must learn to fend for herself and a powerful coalition of two cheetah brothers who are faced with the daunting reality of going it alone. Through the stories of these characters we learn about each of the species with regards to their social behavior, physiology and predatory activity, giving an overview into the lives of these beautiful and intriguing apex predators.
These wild and impressive cats are each equipped with adaptations varying from strength and agility to being able to reach speeds up to 100 kilometers an hour. Traits evolved over thousands of years enabling these creatures to compete with each other for survival in the harsh hunting grounds of the African savanna.

Whether alone or in complex social structures, the Big Cats must work hard to survive in a habitat fraught with challenges. Each of the three cats is different in the way it lives and hunts but all share the title of apex predator in an endlessly active food chain rivaled by few on earth.
