For all of the complaints about the handling of the Kawasaki triples, they cornered like a dream compared to the 1978 KZ-1000 Z1R.

Thanks for the fun and informative video. Now I understand why the Kawasaki H2 750 was considered the most dangerous motorcycle. I had a 1973 Kawasaki G3 90 and this was fast enough for me :-) Cheers from Canada.

the 750 Kawasaki I had didnt say H2 on it, it only said 750 but I remember that bike would scare you to death, especially when you were used to riding the 500 Kawasaki,,,,what sold me on buying a 750 was my best friend Danny already had one, and one night I was coming down the highway very close to where I live now and on the big straight away I was winding the 500 out and I know I was doing probably 115 mph and leaning over to see how fast it would go and out of no where Danny came up behind me on his 750 and went about 100 feet in front of me and seen him let off and shift into 5th gear and ran off and left me, a month later I had a 750,,haha, try to imagine if Kawasaki had built a 1000 3 cylinder 2 stroke,,,oh my God !!! people would have been getting killed hand over foot.

Lol, this was my first motorcycle and it very nearly killed me on multiple occasions. I know that without popping the clutch, in 4th gear, I could twist hard on the throttle and raise the front wheel off the ground at speed. it seemed to have a power band like a dirt bike.

I had a 72, huge expansion chambers. The gas tank had death on a pale horse painted on it. It would light the rear tire before the front would leap to the sky.Almost never went from first to second, shifter was sloppy.
Couldn't stop it, it handled like a a bus, ahh, good times. I actually blew it up. A retainer for a piston pin said good by.
I traded a Mach III 500 for it.

I was blessed to have worked at a local Kawasaki dealer as a service manager and a mechanic in the 70's... Owning four H-1's and three H-2's all highly modified (including the much needed wheely bars on all). I went on to build and race an 1/8 mile F/gas record holder with the power from the 750... Oh the golden days of riding and power... Missing the smell of the Klotz bean oil from the expansion chambers... Thanks brother for the great video and memory lane moment.

From what I understand they made changes to the 500 Mach 3 after the first 2 years and they went back to Points and Coil , they also tamed it down a bit with the port Timing and carburetors. The first one had all the finesse of a chain saw , the power band was sudden and was like crack it scared you but you could not wait to do it again. Sad that they didn’t use reed valves to get more usable power . So good was this simple triple we still see it winning on the strip with the necessary wheelie bars !

Back in the day, I thought the H2 was a tough ride because you were never sure what was going to happen because no two corners at high speed were quite the same. Most ended up being the street drag machines. The Yamaha RD 350 was so good in the corners that you pushed them until you found the breaking point. If I had to ride one through the twisties and my life depended on getting through them first, I'd take the the Yamaha 350.

I bought a brand new Kaw H2 in late 1974. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but a year got interested in cross country touring and bought a '75 Suz GT750. I built it up into a Touring bike with Vetter fairing, saddle bags and other equipment. Thoroughly enjoyed that bike too. Owned both at the same time for a while, then sold them off by 1983 when I bought a Honda Gold Wing Aspencade. There is still nothing like the aroma of an over rich two stroke starting up in the morning.

Widow maker what BS, I had a 71 H1 and friends has the H2 and we would run them wot playing road racer and I used to go on the Marin City Sunday morning ride ,rain or shine . We ran the ride like it was the IOMTT. Ridden with care towards their design limitations [they were wide] there were a ton of fun .

I bought my 72 H2 in the early 80's from a coworker at my first mechanic job. He had removed the oiler, tricked out the carbs, and installed a set of J pipes. I'll never forget the test ride, it almost put the handle bars in my face when it hit THE power band, and the grip almost came off in my hand ! I pulled back up to the shop where we worked, put it on the kick stand, shut it down, and told him I'll take it while struggling to light a cigarette because I was shaking so bad !! I added dual stainless front brakes and still accelerated two to three times the rate it would stop !!

Was on motorized 2 wheels since I was 10. In my late 20's, a buddy let me ride his H2... modified mind you. Expansion chambers, bumped compression, yada, yada. Front wheel hung out in the breeze... even at highway speeds. Was like riding a pissed off chainsaw / hand grenade red headed 2 wheeled child. Gave back his keys... never again!
