Dr. Chesky's Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc - Head-Fi TV

Well I'm obviously a bit late to the party, at least as far as commenting goes, though I did purchase this when it was first released and it is a great demonstration disc for binaural and imaging tests in general. 👍

I just wanted to comment and say that Height Imaging Cues ARE discernible in non-binaural, standard 2-channel stereo recordings, however the effect is best heard using a traditional, well-optimized 2-channel stereo loudspeaker set up in an acoustically-treated room. In the real world, our ears and brain locate the height of a sound source primarily by the influence of the shape of our outer ears.

There quite a few other recordings that exhibit height cues, but two of the more popular commercially available recordings where you can clearly hear these elements of height are:

Michael Jackson's BAD track, though you should use the original 1987 CD release of the BAD album to hear this... In the intro, a helicopter flies back and forth from left to right up high in the soundstage.

On Tears for Fears' The Seeds Of Love CD, the track Woman In Chains features Oleta Adams' background vocals, which appear to float about 6 feet above the lead male vocal which is at a normal level in the recording.

Hey Jude, just bought the album and realised all my headphones were crap! The player I used is Fiio X3, file format is FLAC 192/24. My headphones are Sony MDR-1R MK2 (I guess), ATH-M50, V-moda Crossfade LP & Harman Kardon CL. Tried all of them and can't experience the imaging effect of the binaural recordings. Any suggestions on what headphones to try with this album so I can check it? Thanks for your channel and now I can check using this album before I get one.

My Grado SR80e managed to work with the height test. Somehow.

i will do the whole album for a few days with the grado sr 80s then switch to the grado sr 325s you often get a better comparison that way . 

ive listened to the cheskyys music sounds unbelievable through my grado sr 80s let alone the 325s  i recommend this recording excellent. i have this going in the back ground while watching your vid . hay i did not realise how good the grados were i knew they were good but on this album your talking about . i recomend an album bye andreaous villonwieder called in the cave .i love the record doc . cheers .
