I read a historical article ( sorry cannot remember where), that said that at the time the Greeks considered the defeat of this army by the Persians a complete disaster as it was said no Spartan Army had ever lost, and there was a lot of anger directed towards Leonidas's decision to fight to the death, it was only later that it was used as a unifying point for the Greeks. Whatever the truth, this was one of my favourite stories as a child, after my Mum gave me the book ' Lion in the Gateway' by Mary Renault. We owe the Greeks a huge debt of gratitude.

Wrong.
The Spartans, and other Greeks,at the battle of Thermopylae never debated the terms of surrender to the Persians.
What source you have for this? As an amateur-historian im truly fascinated by ancient Greece, and i've spend a lot of time studying it. So,nowhere i read or picked up anything about the Greeks debating the Persian terms of surrender.
There's just no way to it.
Impossible.

And to think the battle of Thermopylae took place in 480bc. Think about how long ago that was. For reference the Vikings came 1500 years after this. The Aztecs came about 1980 years after this. And if you really want your mind blown the Mayan civilization, all though they originated 2,120 years before the battle of Thermopylae, rose to prominence 730 years after this

The majority of the persian forces were against what they did to Leonidas body. Persia traditions in them time respected all true warriors friendly or foe. So when it was said to remove his head and put it on a spike. Most of the persian saw it as total lack of respect for a true warrior. And i think a lot of Xerxes own men respected him a lot less then they did Leonidas. As he was truly a king and brave warrior willing to die for his people to have a chance.

To the side of my father our region were half Greek and half roman empire, then with the centuries become else , and else , and then again something else that now is almost not possible to explain to normal people's with normal knowledge of the world ... from the side of my father they was warrior and from the side of my mother were poor and honest ,many were priest or notaries or farmer, but during the second World war they all become warriors for to survive at the butcher's that in my country were killing and terrorising people's.
Today as today the world blood and DNA is mixed in many countries, just few countries maintain a bit their DNA because its too strong to be destroyed by war ... just few nation in the world have knowledge of what is going on now and what will be in a very short period .. the 3 world war is started already 2 years ago and people's cannot understand that in the next 10 years billions of people's will disappear from the world and just our father the God will take the choice to spare some of us in every single countries.
