When my grandparents had a pond they spawned almost every season I can remember, but he wasn't a koi breeder and didn't want to be responsible for so many fry so he never really did anything 'special' with them he just let them be. Then as they got bigger he would trade them around the neighborhood.

No spawning yet for me.  My koi have been too young.   I expect in the next couple of years as the oldest koi in my collection mature.

perhaps what age are Koi breeding at? does one consider purchasing just males or females. .. Comets goldfish breed through the summer ,nearly every water top up due to evaporation and temperature change. the age of koi would be very helpful. verse the African cichlids=which rarely need human help(they too breed very well- just go announce to a fish pet store "wow' we got babies, cute little fish,50 and more !then ask do they {the store want to buy them back?} that is a real education. while you are trying to figure out a real answer, other than hey that koi is chasing the other koi= the a ha moment ,guessing that means babies. yet for high end breeding that is a whole different topic. check with pet fish stores if they'll purchase your abundance of fish, first. that is an education ,also check to see how long koi live~ got grandchildren whom may enjoy caring for koi. they =koi are very different than various goldfish,the rest is up to you readers.

My fish have never spawned however I have only had koi for 1 year. My African Cichlids routinely produce. In fact just today I traded some beautiful juveniles to Global Aquatics in Ontario. I don't want my koi to spawn. If or when they do, it will be extra protein. I don't want to figure out what to do with all of those extra fish and I enjoy selecting my stock.

I have breed several African cichlids also, and I always get them to breed after a water change also, I have only had koi spawn once and didn't save the eggs but plan to try it again this year! Greg do you still have cichlids?

put both names on. my koi have spawned a few hours ago. just put them in a holding tank with plenty of aeration. fingers crossed. need a travel coffee mug too. :)

You can also try a DIY spawning "mop" out of yarn, not just any yarn though, look up how to do it on google. People make the same contraptions for breeding other fish, and I'm sure you can adapt it to breeding koi.

I had my goldfish and Koi spawn together and make a bunch of hybrids that had really unique colors. And I'm a firm believer that fresh water encourages them to spawn when water temps are around 65-70. Had a thunderstorm dump 2 inches of rain in an hour last spring and the next morning all the fish were chasing like crazy through the water hyacinth.

Hey love your videos very informative ...we just opened a koi shop(Hilltop koi) in Wayne, NJ and also build some ponds ...we just love ponds, koi, outdoor work and anyone who does the same!....keep up the good work!

so my biggest koi is i would say 7maybe 8 inches but all my others are smaller than that down to 2 inches being the smallest i hope i can use this idea to get them to be a spawning pair i am going to take these two truck beds i have and set them up as ponds in my garage and try to get my butterfly koi to mate with one of my mirror koi and i have another butterfly koi to add to the mix as well as a possible butterlfy mirror to pair eith a couple nice butterflys and mirrors i am hoping for the chance at selling some but iwant a full butterfly mirror koi pond so we shall see how the next couple years go
