Queen Elizabeth II is also a descendant of Catherine Carey through her mother. Catherine Carey was a child of Mary Boleyn (Anne Boleyn's sister), and some historians also believe she could have been fathered by Henry VIII. Thus, technically, the descendants of Henry VIII could very well be on the throne already. Furthermore, the current monarchs are also descendants of Henry VII through his daughter Margaret.

As soon as the question about whether the Tudor line still existed was asked, I knew the answer was yes because I’m one of the people who can trace their ancestry back to Henry VII. I can trace my lineage back to him through Mary, Queen of Scots.

Book seems worth reading! Great vid. One thing confused me a bit though. Henry VIII, a terrible king? I know he was a brutal tyrant who killed many, but I've heard other historians represent that he brought England forward into the modern age.

Thank you so much for bringing up the average age issue. It drives me crazy because so many people don't understand how the infant mortality rate drives down the average. Because risk of death was very real for pregnant women, I wouldn't use the if you lived to your 30s you would have a long life in regard to women. But definitely if you survived your childbearing years, you had good odds of living into your 70s or 80s.

What happened in 1450 so that you consider that year a dividing line between Medieval Period and Early Modern? Do you look at the changes of written script and spoken languages? Would these years only apply to England or do they also apply to Wales and Scotland? Do they apply to the continent?

Nowadays, even modern monarchs must grasp the importance of retaining their private papers for historians to review decades later. In America, we have the Presidential Papers Act that requires every scrap of paper to be saved for the future Presidential Library in that President’s name. Is there any obligation for modern monarchs to retain such journals? Around what time did archivists convince the royal households of the need to keep as much documentation of the day to day workings and thought process, for the decades to come?

If there is any type of legal retention law, when do those records first open for research? I remember something about Queen Victoria’s private chambers in the Isle of Wight being closed for 50 years after her death. Was that arbitrary? I know Queen Victoria was a prolific journal author. However, her daughter redacted, edited and even destroyed much of the crucial writings out of embarrassment during the early 20th century. Would such redactions and edits be allowed nowadays?

Henry VIII was not the worst. He did a lot of good things, notably destroying the power of the Catholic Church in England. That paved the way for the religious freedom we have today, By which I mean that we are free to not believe it without fear of persecution, unlike most countries.
IMO, the worst was 'Bloody Mary) (Mary I) who tried to reinstate the Catholics in power and during her five-year reign, had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake. 3 of them were burned in my town and their remains rest in the church graveyard.

It's disingenuous to say that women dying from child birth in this era is because of the patriarchy. Until modern times and medicine complications from child birth was prevalent for every country.

This woman’s accent is fascinating! I want to know if she’s someone from the UK who lives in North America, or someone from North America who lives in the UK. Her accent is a mixture of both.

Elizabeth II was descended from Catherine Carey, Mary Boleyn’s eldest daughter. Catherine was born around the time of Henry and Mary’s affair. Many contemporaries believed her to be Henry’s daughter.

Diana was descended from Henry Carey who was born after Mary was married to her husband. Henry never claimed Henry Carey, but he did claim an illegitimate son with Bessie Blount. If Henry Carey was Henry VIII’s it stands to reason that he would have been claimed. Since he wasn’t it is unlikely that Henry Carey was a Tudor. Henry needed sons, but had an abundance of daughters.

So the current Prince of Wales, William, would not be the first probable descendant of Henry VIII, his grandmother Elizabeth II was.
