I'm truly surprised they use real tempered glass. I thought they used sugar glass, which is fake and made from sugar....but it breaks like annealed glass would. Annealed glass is "regular" glass that breaks in large sharp pieces. Tempered glass breaks in tiny safe pieces and can be safely handled even as an unbroken piece cuz the edges are sanded. If it is thick enough, like double 1/4" you can hit it with a hammer and it won't break...however if you even lightly tap a corner on the edge the whole thing explodes into tiny safe pieces. I don't get why they use explosives cuz it will explode on its own if you just rigged something to tap a corner edge....I guess the timing is easier. Annealed glass is super easy to break anywhere but also dangerous cuz it will cut you....but if you know how to handle it you can avoid getting cut. The key is to never let the edge move parallel to your skin, but you can slide it perpendicular all day and be safe (like a scraping motion).

I would just like to say that the ratchet pull and all those tricks make for terrible movies.

I'm sorry but why would they use tempered glass for throwing stunt performers through? It does not break into harmless pieces. Yes it breaks into small pieces but they are still very sharp and can do quite a bit of damage. Ever drop a pyrex liquid measure and step on the glass afterwards? You end up with glass in your foot. I'm pretty sure that actually cutting your actors for filming is illegal hence makeup. What they actually use for breaking glass against skin is called sugar glass and it's exactly what it sounds like. It's basically just melted sugar formed into whatever shape they need and it easily shatters into a harmless dust.
