Happy Earth Day from the Beckley Foundation

In 1943, shortly after the establishment of the Manhattan Project, Albert Hofmann discovered LSD, kickstarting the Psychedelic Revolution. It was his belief that his discovery had come at exactly the right time to help offset the self-destructive capabilities that humanity had unleashed by inventing the atomic bomb.

Now, as then, humanity comes face to face with our ability to bring about our own end, in the form of catastrophic climate change and species extinction; and now, as then, psychedelics are beginning to be incorporated into mainstream Western society.

Psychedelic compounds like LSD and psilocybin have been shown to increase nature connectedness, something that has been sadly lost to the increasingly urban, digital, and nature-depleted world that we live in. They could help to nurture a more sustainable relationship between Homo sapiens and the planet we inhabit.

In fact, Albert's preferred way to use the remarkable substance he created was to take a small dose and to walk alone in the woods near his home.

"LSD wanted to tell me something. It gave me an inner joy, an open mindedness, a gratefulness, open eyes, and an internal sensitivity for the miracles of creation." he said, "I was completely astonished by the beauty of nature."
