I joined an essay writing contest because my teacher and my mother, meaning I didn’t voluntarily want to and I really didn’t know how. Days pass and the essay writing contest has begun, in my mind I didn’t want to win so I didn’t try to make it good BUT I still made it to the stupid finals. - The goal of an essay is to persuade the reader of a position or perspective, based on informed arguments with evidence and analysis
- There are 3 main stages to writing an essay: Preparation, Writing, Revision
- Choose a topic and an initial thesis, which will be the main point you want to make in the essay. Doesn’t need to be clearly phrased, but need a clear idea of what you want to say
- Creatine outline/plan essay structure

Introduction:

- Start with introduction - trying to grab the readers interest immediately, while informing them of what will be in the essay. Hook in 1st sentence, then give context (background info, overview of academic work, difficult terms). Just need to give the reader a taste.
- Thesis statement - the central argument which is only 1-2 sentences long, and drives the entire essay.
- Finish with an overview of the essay

Body:

- Make arguments to support the thesis, provide evidence, and develop ideas
- To give structure, use paragraphs where each paragraph is centred around 1 idea.
- Start paragraphs with topic sentences, which are sentences that make a transition from the previous paragraph, and introduces the arguments that are to be made in the upcoming paragraph. (Point)
- After the topic sentence, provide evidence which provides the reader with data, examples or quotes. Make sure to interpret and explain the evidence, showing how it helps to develop the overall argument. (Evidence)

Conclusion:

- Summarise and tie together the points made, show the outcome of the argument, and emphasise why the argument matters

Revising:

- Double check arguments(have you said everything you need to or do some points need restructuring), grammar, spelling and formatting
- If sources have been cited, use a plagiarism checker

Nice video... I can see that u showed the Topic sentence and Supporting evidence, and did not see two things in the body structure:- 1. Usually after the topic sentence u will need to expand on the topic sentence before providing evidence, and 2. Implication after the evidence. Can anyone here explain how they are taught to write an academic essay? Mine was from 2013, so properly outdated. 😂

I know I have to do this but every time I sit down to write I just can’t, I start but quickly make an excuse to do something or check my phone real quick, then I just end up never getting it done. Does anyone have a way to help me focus and just do it? I just get so easily distracted

Begin with what you are ready to write—a plan, a few sentences or bullet points. Start with the body and work paragraph by paragraph. Write the introduction and conclusion after the body.
