I read a real brochure for the army once - adventure, travel, different cultures, water skiing, though not a single mention that you might have to go to war and have people shooting at you.

Couldn't laugh back then, definitely not laughing today.

Well, in fact 50 years later Russian mobsters decided it sounds like a perfect business plan and started racketing local military. It worked pretty well for them, as while in Russia, the military are just another clerks in public sector, overregulated and defenseless against an organized crime backed by local authorities / bosses. From what I heard, even those who participated in destroying Syria (and especially those as they were the ones paid handsomely) were successfully racketed when back in motherRussia.
There's nothing more absurd than real life.

It's good to be reminded that not everything Python was funny. There were a lot of quality pieces but this wasn't one of them.

Just recently (late 2024/early 2025}, the British Army's latest recruiting videos feature as the real reason for joining up: (1) lots of lovely sport; (2) learning a useful trade (electrician).

Huh, the Colonel missed out on a great opportunity. For a mere 15 bob a week, the mafia would have been bound to protect the Army from any attack. It IS protection after all. Right? Even the coward would have liked the idea. The protection racket would be sent to fight instead of him.

When I read the title, I thought it was the army engaging in a protection racket. That seems like fodder for a skit, because it is kind of true (you give army funding, they are supposed to protect you).

It ended suddenly because the Python writers got in too deep and couldn’t think of a way out.

This was very silly.
