This movie “Mimino” is just a small tip of the iceberg for for the genius of the Soviet films

Mimino not only looks like Borat, but the secondary characters (Azamat in Borat and Rubik in Mimino) in both movies are played by Armenians.

Well what do you expect, most Soviet film makers were paid by goverment, they never care much in term of comercial success or following crowd demand, Soviet film makers care more about art, philosophy, and beauty aspect of their movies with cultural atribut closely link to each film makers personal views and life. Like many orthodox christian value inside many Mr. Tarkovsky's movies or Armeian and Georgian culture engraved throughout Mr. Parajanov's movies.

Being from czech rep, we kinda also have this sentiment, though we werent exactly a soviet country. To use the metaphore, we lived in the same city, but different blockhouse. I think our most favorite soviet-like movie (even though its from 1998) is Svéráz národního rybolovu = Особенности национальной рыбалки, its super funny and shows russian mentality quite well. Too bad the actual russia took a 180 turn and is where it is now.

В совке правда было много хороших фильмов, но не благодаря, а вопреки.
