What to Look For in a Stone Patio | Texas Best Fence and Stain

Stone patio structure doesn't always have to be stones cut with straight lines. It can still be more natural with curves and everything, but the mortar joints can be consistent at about a half-inch to an inch.

You see a lot of guys wanting to go fast to get jobs done in two or three days, but it looks like somebody had taken a giant thing of caulking or toothpaste to put all the stone together. Then you've got three to four inch gaps of mortar between your stone.

The stones should be the highlight and the mortar should be an accent, a border, it shouldn't take over the stone project.

A lot of contractors don't put rebar in the concrete underneath and you'll have problems over time with ground movement in Texas. We have caliche soil, we have clay, we have in some areas silt, and sandy loam.

You really have to know the soil to know what you're able to do and as far as drainage and if it's gonna swell or contract. In many cases it's important to make sure you have a nice rebar and concrete base.
