I disagree re af Klints "just diagrams". The specific and sophisticated choices of artistic elements makes her work just as much abstract art as Kandinsky's Rothko's or De Kooning's. The language or stimulus for the work is irrelevant, the work stands alone despite the creator's story.

Abstract art which is nothing more than just abstract "art" is a lazy/less-gifted human's work, inspite of all the tedious manual work it may involve! And such people dare to work on such nonsense because the old masters are dead and therefore will not be able to criticize them!!

Bold statement to say that there is no such thing as "spirit". The "fact" is that everything we can see with our eyes, and even measure with all of humanity's instruments amounts to around 3% of existence. The remaining 97% is dark matter/energy. That's a pretty big question mark! In fact, NIH has logged millions of near-death accounts of the other side of the veil. A few accounts could be considered anecdotal evidence, but millions are data. Why are so many atheists and agnostics even more dogmatic and less scientific than fundamentalist nuts? Einstein said that "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."

As an artist I cannot imagine having someone else pick out my colors...that's half the fun for me when envisioning/starting a new painting...as is sometimes me changing them as it goes along.

I always have to chuckle when I read or hear someone say there are no such things as "spirits" simply because they haven't experienced their existence. As if one person (or many for that matter) could really "know" what exists within the seemingly infinite realms of the universe from beginning to end within and without. What we can't "see" or "experience" is boundlessly more than what we can. Humanity knows next to nothing. I dare you MC to read "God Speaks" by Meher Baba. You might learn quite a bit more than what you think "is". Pry open the little box you live in MC, jump out and breathe! I do have to say I enjoyed the documentary though, seeing the art and the artists behind them.

Klint also was a classically trained artist. The translation into spiritual beauty (balance, form, colour, light) to the beholding eye came from deep learning.

After the invention of photography, many artists felt that they’d come to an impasse. Fundamental questions changed, from how well a painter reflected nature to “what now?” and “how do we stay relevant?” New ways of looking at art emerged from existential crisis, changing how we saw images, as a purely philosophical matter, as divorced or “abstracted” from nature. Soon Leo Stein, the brother of Gertrude Stein, who “discovered” Picasso, Braque, Matisse and others, began advising art speculators to “only buy art you hate.”

This is really interesting. Unfortunately the music is only a terrible noise pollution which prevents listening to what the the voice is saying. As for the ads in the middle, not acceptable. With regret, I have to give up this series.

The captions were done by a bot. Look at the English caption just before the episode title appears, where the older artist says, “Hello Matthew....etc.” It’s complete nonsense. Later, we get horrendous background “music”, if yo7. An call it that, a Psychoesque threatening track combing the while of Formula 1 racing cars with the ominous hum of killer bees. Why? What sort of nincompoops are the BBC employing, and why doesn’t anyone do any quality control?

Abstract artists are the embodiment of free creative spirit. However, "amid complicated and potentially confusing works there are hidden rules", especially when you take your time to decode it. Thank you for such insightful video series. If you're interested in taking a closer look at the artworks of famous Early Abstract artists, we've created the entire video for you to appreciate the deep meaning behind each piece.
