On video cards, the pressure of the amount is not very high so you should always use a spatula to cover the thermal paste fully on the dye.

I'm pretty sure that nothing inside a computer should run at 85c which is 185f, At 185 that motherboard should spontaneously combust. 45c would be more likely a good temp, Or even cooler.

This is my primary reason for never buying used or "refurbished" computer parts. The money saved just isn't worth the time and money spent trying to diagnose something you had nothing to do with. Of course, things may be just fine too, but for me, it's not worth the risk.

Why wouldn't you start with a bios update then ram in the wrong slots, a bios upgrade can possibly fix issues with dual channel on some processors, move on from there. Do the easy stuff first.

I have a question. I have a 6500xt. It gets very hot and the paste on it is very dry. and the thermal pads are dried up as well. I'mnot sure what thickness is needed for the pads. Do you know which ones I can use?

I had an i5 4570 that had a dead memory channel, so I had to use 2 of my 4 RAM slots in single channel mode. One day i was cleaning the CPU and the Heatsink+Fan and I accidentally dropped the CPU, and i thought for sure the CPU was done, but that actually ended up fixing the dead memory channel issue.

When i was 13 my dad and i built my first pc together. We got shipped out a broken b250m from gigabyte (the socket was mangeld up) They refused to send us a new one :( we fixed the socket and got the pc to boot. I had a ddr4 8gb single stick in there back then. and I also bought a second hand i5 6400 which later when i upgraded to dual channel wouldn't boot. not with my dads corsair ram and not with my kingston ram either. It would only boot in single channel. i thought it was the motherbord that wouldnt let us post but Thanks to your video i now found out that it was the cpu. So i basicly just found out that 13 year old me has been scammed twice at the same time :( your video's are very educational keep up the great work! <3

I'm starting to think for things that you don't want to take apart very often like laptops and video cards, I'm starting to use Honeywell PTM7950 thermal pads instead of paste. Thermal pads as well as the PTM7950 should last the life of the product.

Maybe a new video opportunity (?), Although LTT has already done a video on it, there are very few others that have featured it.

@GlassWolfLH
@GlassWolfLH - 19.05.2023 20:01

When you apply the thermal paste, use an old credit card or similar type of thing to spread the paste evenly over the surface of the card, instead of just glomping it all over the GPU surface and squishing it all over the PCB. Just a little suggestion. I tint my processors with paste then spread over the surface before applying a cooler. Works great. Also, since you're doing the labor for free, perhaps suggest the donors of these systems pay for any hardware that requires replacement as a stipulation of the repair service. They're still saving a load of money in troubleshooting.

I have 5 Ryzen PC builds that I have limited their overclock boosts to a speed between their rated speeds and their maximum boosted speeds, keeping them between 4.4 GHz and 4.5 GHz. This keeps performance up, temperatures low-ish (around 54 degC while gaming), and increases their lifespan.

When using Ryzen Master to test & stress Per Core boosts, it told me the highest boost speed of each of the 3 Ryzen 9 5900X CPUs. One CPU had a boost speed of 5.05 Ghz!! Two other had 4.9 GHz. When I applied the boost, all 3 PCs would inadvertently crash, with one of them boot-cycling like you showed in this Fix or Flop. I fixed that issue in the BIOS by manually inputting a value in CPU Core Ratio, which I set to 45.00. Next time, try going into the BIOS and setting the CPU Core Ratio to 44.00 or 45.00 under AI Tweaker, and see if that doesn't solve the issue.

I bet someone took that GPU apart and didn't put it back together properly... the seller knew it was a problem... scammy. Dual Channel doesn't matter as much... I run single sticks Gskill 3200Mhz for my Ryzen and dual 3200Mhz sticks... I don't even notice the speed difference. On my server I run 4 x 8GB Corsair 3200Mhz sticks all running on assorted machines... all my machines are rock solid Ryzen 5950x (my main machine), 3950x (bedroom pc #1), 5600G (guest PC), 3600 bedroom PC2, 2400G, 2700x (480TB Plex server), and lastly my 1700x. Going generations further back, my FX8150, and Thuban 1100T all still running to this day. I could go back to the K5, K6, and Athlon chips... still running. Of course, we never overclock, and we're very picky which motherboards we use so customers don't have issues.

I have had memory channel issues on quite a few 2400G chips... getting those 100% stable was an exercise in futility... well, I did get ONE 100% stable. But, all 1000 series, 3000 series, 5000 series are all rock solid so far but we also ONLY sell Asus x570 boards to customers.

I have never taken one of the mazerine style GPU's apart yet... well, so far, none of mine anyways have ever died. I still have my 4970 or whatever it was flagship card waaay back in the day, my 5970, my RX590 AMD anniversary edition gold card RGB, RX590 Blue RGB, and for my server nVidia 1670Ti I think it was and lastly my Asus Strix 3070Ti.

I had this exact GPU issue which sucked because i have a 3090fe and really don't want to replace it with a new one, i tried to rma it from nvidia but they had me install their ddu program that will fully factory reset it to its old November 2020 drivers, once I downloaded the new drivers it runs perfectly fine now, my issue was I had windows 10 but then upgraded to windows 11 which I think could of corrupted some drivers

Been going through a somewhat similar situ:
G. A. X570 Master V 1.0 with up-to-date bios.
Board originally had an H115i 280mm cooler on a 2700X , then after a year, it got swapped to a 3800X....

All CPU were run native speeds (no OC) for many months without issue

Then last year, the cooler was upped to an H150i 360mm unit & a 5800X dropped in...
Things didn't start to go sideways till I tried to add more ram..
(known good RAM too)
2x16 Corsair LPX 3200/16 = Board reports 32GB total, in either channel
2X16 Corsair V RGB Pro 3200/16 = Board reports 32GB total, in either channel
Seems all cool...

4X16 Corsair V RGB Pro 3200/16 = Board reports 32GB total
???HUH???

2X16 + 2x8GB Corsair LPX 3200/16 = Board reports 24GB total (channel irrelevant)
2X16 + 2x8GB Corsair V RGB Pro 3200/16 = Board reports 24GB total (channel irrelevant)
W?????????????????????????????????????????
T?????????????????????????????????????????
H?????????????????????????????????????????
then on a normal reboot, that system's Win files suddenly 5D folded themselves into an alternative Universe.

ive taken 2 base model gigabyte rx 590s apart to see dried up patchy paste that hadnt even seen much use pretty pathetic and tbh they would have to be doing it on purpose to shorten the cards lifespan because funnily enough the reason why i took those cards apart was because one had died 3 months out of its 3 year warranty ahah

I am encountering a similar issue with my new pc build. After gaming for a short time, either only the game would crash, or my pc crashes and restarts. I replaced the psu but it was still crashing after that. The crash reports when it’s just the game that crashes says it’s a driver issue, but all of my drivers are up to date. My ram sticks run properly as well. But, after seeing this video, I’m betting it’s the gpu as I have almost the exact same card as this video. I don’t want to void the warranty by taking it apart, so it looks like I’m going to be sending it back for a refund. 😬
