-Juventae Chasma is an enormous (250 km X 100 km) box canyon peripheral to the Valles Marineris trough system.

-Juventae is the product of a unique merger of a Martian chaotic terrain depression and an extensional (tectonic) chasm.

-Within the chasm are four discrete bodies of layered, light-toned rocks of sedimentary origin, and a sulfate deposit mountain 2500 meters from the floor of the Chasma to the summit, stretching over 59 km in length.

-The light-toned mounds depicted in the film are now known to consist mostly of salts of sulfuric acid that were formed when water had evaporated in the distant martian past.

-The darker material seen in the film mostly represents wind-blown debris that have formed into various sizes of dunes that can clearly be seen from space.
