Your investment strategy ought to fit your circumstances. I do high yield (10%+) dividend stock investing exclusively for four reasons: 1) I formerly invested in mutual funds (an exclusive growth strategy) via my bank between 2000 and 2012 (the stock market historically has had long growth periods and long flat periods, and that was one of the flat ones), and made absolutely NO money over that period, and eventually got all my money out and vowed I would never waste time and money on the stock market ever again, 2) I instead began investing in commercial property that yields 9% after expenses, and so any additional investment I make now must compete against this 9% yield (I own four properties and could easily buy another one), 3) I returned to the stock market 18 months ago at age 65, so I do not have the time in years to wait for my stocks to grow in value, 4) since my main retirement strategy via commercial property is already well established, these new stock investments are entirely extra and secondary, and so their performance is far less critical to my retirement strategy and I can afford to take the risk. Frankly, I still don't trust the market at all, and so I chose to invest in stocks that have a minimum of five years of dividend payment history, and I am highly diversified in five different types of stocks and I have purchased many of each type. My goal is eventually to own up to 100 different stocks, so that if any one or more of them cuts their dividend payments or even goes entirely belly up and I lose all my investment, it will not make much of a dent at all in my portfolio as a whole.
