It looks like a combination of a FAL mixed with the standard AR platform of firearms. Not a bad concept by any means and packs a pretty hefty round down range. The failure was possibly a magazine issue. Old magazines tend to wear down overtime after consistent use. Still a great looking and functional rifle though.

Why is his support arm not under the rifle?

Very cool gun . That little jam will happen from time to time and typically goes away as the gun is used for a few hundred rounds. This is exactly why people need to vet their defensive guns for ideally 1500 rounds for a pistol and 2000 for a rifle or carbine. Those little jams can put you underground in those situations. Fun fact , the older Winchester 64 grain .223 loads and potentially the new ones, if they have the same length and profile, are designed to stabilize In the old 1/12" twist barrels. The 64 grain super x and power point are actually very good home defense options, the 64 grain solid base bonded are better for property defense and when light barriers are a potential issue.
