You may have seen an Amtrak Metroliner without even noticing it. They look very similar to Amfleet cars, but with one major difference: there's a driver's cab.
The Metroliners date back to 1969, two years before Amtrak was established. The Pennsylvania Railroad and later Penn Central wanted a high-speed, luxury train between New York and Washington DC. So the Budd Company built these electric multiple units. Amtrak inherited them, but they had tons of electrical problems. So eventually, Amtrak refurbished most of the Metroliners into cab cars. They still run on Hartford Line and Keystone services, but once a week, one cab car makes its way onto the Northeast Regional down to DC.
Car 9800 is also a former Metroliner, now an unpowered lounge car that organizations or sports teams can rent.
